DK Metcalf went well beyond football when he sat down with The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones, and the Steelers wideout didn’t shy away from his wildest thoughts about Antarctica.
Metcalf called the continent “another world,” and said he believes “there is another civilization inside of Earth.” He added that Aaron Rodgers didn’t spark his interest in conspiracy theories, though the two teammates “can bond over it.”
The 28-year-old also pointed to what he sees as a curious pattern involving Antarctica and world leaders.
“Why is there a secret meeting - well, it’s not secret,” Metcalf says, “but why is there a meeting between every world leader of every country in Antarctica, specifically?”
Jones pushed back on that idea, noting that “there is no verifiable evidence of such meetings taking place.”
Brent Christner, an associate professor of microbiology at the University of Florida who is also a Steelers fan and has made eight trips to Antarctica, added that there are “distinguised visitors” who travel there, but “there's not like a G7 that occurs down here.”
Jones also wrote that there is “no unified theory on a secret civilization within Antarctica,” and pointed out that trips to the continent can be booked, despite Metcalf’s question about why that isn’t possible.
Back on the field, Metcalf is entering his second season in Pittsburgh, and the expectation is that he’ll be far more productive than he was a year ago. In Arthur Smith’s system, he finished with a career-low 850 yards and six touchdowns on 59 catches, his fewest receptions since his rookie year in 2019.
That picture should change under new head coach Mike McCarthy, who is installing a fresh scheme and handling play-calling on offense. The setup should give Metcalf more chances in the vertical passing game and a bigger stage to flash the explosiveness that made him Pittsburgh’s No. 1 receiver.
He also enters the 2026 campaign with a year of chemistry already built up with Rodgers, something that could matter as the Steelers try to open things up through the air.
Pittsburgh has added more options to the mix, including Michael Pittman Jr. and Germie Bernard, among others, but Metcalf still sits at the top of the depth chart and could be in line to top 1,000 receiving yards for the fourth time in his career.
