Jerry Jones keeps saying the Cowboys will look at every avenue before the November 10 NFL trade deadline, and one name is starting to stand out as a realistic fit: Alex Highsmith.
Dallas may not have the draft capital to chase a blockbuster, especially with its 2027 picks limited, but that doesn’t mean the front office has to sit out the market entirely. On 105.3 The Fan, John Owning pointed to Highsmith of the Pittsburgh Steelers as a player who could make sense for the Cowboys if they decide to make a move.
“Everyone talks about Maxx Crosby as kind of the golden goose that everyone wants to get. And I think obviously bringing him in would be a huge impact.
He'd be a very valuable defender. But I just don't think that's very feasible given the draft picks that the Cowboys have, but I do think someone like I've talked to (Bryan) Broaddus about this a few times is Alex Highsmith from the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Owning said.
Owning’s case was simple: Highsmith is young enough to help now and later, and he’d bring value beyond just this season. “I think he's someone who is young enough, he's impactful enough, and if you brought him in, he's someone who, even if this year is not your year, he can be impactful year two, year three, year four for you.
So it's still, it legitimizes trading for him. So I think he's someone who can make an impact, not only in the pass rush department, but also defending the run on the edge.
He would immediately walk into the team and be the number one edge defender.”
Highsmith has 18 tackles and 3.5 sacks this season while rotating with T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig. He also signed a four-year, $68 million extension in 2023, which keeps him under contract through the 2027 season.
The Steelers also extended Herbig this offseason, a move that only added to the speculation around Highsmith as a possible trade target for Dallas. That possibility has already been floated by Cowboys On SI.
A deal between the Cowboys and Steelers wouldn’t come out of nowhere, either. Dallas has already traded for George Pickens, Broderick Jones, and Joey Porter Jr. over the past two seasons, and those moves have worked out well enough that another swing at a Steelers player would not be a shock.

Steelers Could Use Mason Rudolph To Shape The Ravens Stretch Run
With Baltimore suddenly navigating a quarterback crisis, the Ravens have become a logical team to watch for outside help as the stretch run approaches. The injuries to Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley have forced the front office into a difficult spot, and any move at the position would have ripple effects not just for Baltimore, but for the AFC North race as a whole.
For Pittsburgh, Mason Rudolph sits in the middle of that conversation as a possible trade chip with real strategic value. A deal would not only give the Steelers a chance to extract draft capital, it could also keep Baltimore from turning to a more established name at quarterback, which would change the balance of the division in a hurry. Steelers Have A DK Metcalf Problem They Cant Ignore
Even with the Steelers riding a winning streak and sitting atop the AFC North, the conversation around their passing game keeps circling back to DK Metcalf. Pittsburgh brought him in to be the kind of receiver who changes how defenses play them, but his production has been uneven enough that the team still does not have the steady, week-to-week force it expected when it made the move.
What makes the issue harder to ignore is the way Metcalf seems to fit best when another receiver can draw attention away from him. The Steelers have not really given him that kind of partner yet, and until they do, the offense may keep asking him to carry a role that does not fully match how he is most effective. [Read more 🡒]
Steelers Trade Deadline Could Finally Test Omar Khans Biggest Promise
The Steelers are heading into the trade deadline with a familiar kind of urgency, only this time the focus is squarely on help for the stretch run. Depth at wide receiver and cornerback has become part of the conversation as Pittsburgh looks for ways to steady a roster that has dealt with injuries and wants to stay positioned for a playoff push. For Omar Khan, it is the sort of deadline that can turn a general managers stated intent into something more tangible.
Pittsburgh has already been linked to Colts wideout Josh Downs, and Garrett Wilson and Brian Thomas Jr. have also surfaced as names to watch, which tells you the team is at least doing the homework on impact options. Cornerback remains the other area to monitor, though no one target has emerged publicly there yet, and the real question is whether the Steelers will settle for depth or try to land a move that changes the feel of the roster.
