Cowboys George Pickens Plan Holds After Massive Receiver Deal

Despite Jaxon Smith-Njigba's record-breaking deal, the Cowboys remain poised to keep George Pickens on the franchise tag, focusing on overcoming past controversies.

George Pickens of the Dallas Cowboys finds himself at an intriguing crossroads following the recent contract news involving Seattle Seahawks standout Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Smith-Njigba's blockbuster four-year, $168.6 million deal, with a hefty $120 million guaranteed, has certainly shifted the landscape for wide receivers. For Pickens, this development could potentially elevate his own market value as he eyes a long-term contract.

Currently, Pickens is slated to play the 2026 season under the franchise tag, set at approximately $27.3 million. However, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated suggests that this new benchmark may not sway Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones into rushing a long-term deal for Pickens.

Pickens' past with the Pittsburgh Steelers still casts a shadow over his current situation. Breer notes, "There’s a good chance George Pickens plays this year on the one-year tender. Given his history with the Steelers and why he slipped in the 2022 draft, the Cowboys might want to ensure that his 2025 performance was a genuine step forward rather than an anomaly before committing to a deal similar to Smith-Njigba's."

During his time with the Steelers from 2022 to 2024, Pickens was often at the center of controversy. Reports of sideline outbursts, tardiness, and a "litany of violations" led to his trade to Dallas.

Despite these issues, Pickens showcased his elite talent in his first season with the Cowboys, amassing 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns. Yet, he still faced discipline for being late and was benched for missing a team bus, raising concerns about his consistency and professionalism.

Complicating matters further, Puka Nacua and the Los Angeles Rams have yet to finalize an extension, which could have influenced Pickens' market value. With the deadline for tagged players to sign multiyear contracts looming on July 15, it appears the Cowboys are content to let Pickens play under the tag unless he opts to sit out and forfeit earnings.

In essence, George Pickens is at a pivotal point. His undeniable talent is matched by questions about his reliability, leaving the Cowboys with a decision that could shape their future and his. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on how Pickens navigates this high-stakes year.
