Commanders Host Former Steelers CB After Injury Setback

Veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon is garnering interest from the Washington Commanders as he seeks to revive his NFL career.

Ahkello Witherspoon, a seasoned cornerback with a knack for making plays, might soon find himself donning the colors of the Washington Commanders. As he gears up for his 10th NFL season, Witherspoon is slated to visit the Commanders, according to insider Mike Garafolo.

The 31-year-old re-upped with the Los Angeles Rams last March on a one-year deal, marking his third season with them. Unfortunately, a broken clavicle sidelined him for much of the 2025 season, limiting his appearances to just six games.

Witherspoon's journey to the Rams began in 2023 after his release from the Pittsburgh Steelers. His time in Pittsburgh was marked by immediate impact; acquired from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, he quickly became a defensive asset. In his initial stint with the Steelers, Witherspoon snagged three interceptions in just three starts, earning himself a two-year contract extension.

The 2022 season held promise, with Witherspoon set as a starting outside cornerback for the Steelers. However, injuries, particularly a persistent hamstring issue, disrupted his momentum, leading to multiple stints on injured reserve.

Originally drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Witherspoon has compiled an impressive career stat line: 243 tackles, 13 interceptions, 60 passes defensed, and a touchdown. His ability to disrupt offenses has been evident throughout his career, and if he joins the Commanders, he could bring a veteran presence to their secondary.
