The Pittsburgh Steelers have built a legacy of success over the past two decades, with Ben Roethlisberger playing a pivotal role. As a future Hall of Famer, Roethlisberger led the team to two Super Bowl victories, each under a different head coach.
His journey in Pittsburgh was marked by a host of talented receivers, which helped him flourish as a young quarterback. Instantly impactful, Roethlisberger is widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
Throughout his career, Roethlisberger amassed over 64,000 passing yards and 418 touchdowns, placing him firmly in the top 10 all-time for both categories. Recently, on the Deebo & Joe Show, Roethlisberger revealed his favorite target during his playing days. Without hesitation, he named Heath Miller as his top choice.
"Heath Miller was different," Roethlisberger shared. "He was the guy who, if he dropped a pass, you'd wonder what went wrong.
Always in the right place, tough as nails, and fearless in blocking. He was my comfort blanket.
I'd pick Miller for a game of flag football any day."
Miller was a reliable and dynamic target for Roethlisberger, known for their ability to improvise and create big plays when the pocket collapsed. Their chemistry was undeniable, leading to numerous victories and memorable moments on the field. Both spent their entire careers with the Steelers, crafting a legacy filled with highlight-reel plays.
Drafted 30th overall in the 2005 NFL Draft out of the University of Virginia, Miller was a steal for Pittsburgh. Over 11 seasons, he became one of the greatest tight ends in franchise history, earning two Pro Bowl selections and two Super Bowl rings. As a rookie, Miller was a standout, finishing second in AP Offensive Rookie of the Year voting, and remained a cornerstone of the Steelers' offense throughout his career.
Miller's consistency was evident through two coaching regimes, retiring after the 2015 season with 45 career touchdowns-41 of those from Roethlisberger. Their partnership exemplified the importance of chemistry and a reliable target for a quarterback, much like the current connection between Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
Looking ahead, the Steelers have promising tight ends in Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington. Both have shown potential but have been underutilized recently.
Freiermuth, in particular, has demonstrated his capabilities and could emerge as a top tight end in the league. However, last season saw him overshadowed by other talents in the tight end room, with Jonnu Smith, now released, taking more snaps.
For the Steelers to optimize their offense, they must leverage their tight ends more effectively. With a new coaching staff and offensive system in place, there's hope that players like Freiermuth and Washington will be unlocked, driving the Steelers' offense to operate like the well-oiled machine it can be.
