Aaron Rodgers Turned Steelers Win In France Into An NFL Debate

Aaron Rodgers reveals behind-the-scenes struggles and controversies within the NFL's ambitious but flawed efforts for global expansion.

Aaron Rodgers left France with a win, but he didn’t exactly leave feeling warm and fuzzy about the NFL’s approach to going global.

After leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 16-10 victory over the New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, Rodgers used his postgame press conference to unload on the league’s international setup. The game marked the NFL’s first-ever regular-season contest in France and drew a record-setting 78,488 ticketed fans.

Rodgers was efficient enough on the field to make his mark in the record book, too. He threw one touchdown pass, moving him past Peyton Manning and into third place on the NFL’s career touchdown passes list. Rodgers now stands alone at 540 career touchdown passes.

But the bigger message came after the final whistle.

Rodgers said the league once had a cleaner, more ambitious idea for international expansion: one dedicated international week in the season, with every team playing abroad and an extra bye week built in. In his telling, that plan came up during previous collective bargaining talks before owners scrapped it in favor of adding a 17th game.

“There was talk about doing a week, an international week, where you had games in 16 different places, and you just added an extra bye week,” Rodgers began. “So you play 16 regular season, you have two bye weeks, one of those weeks would’ve been an international week, I think it would’ve been phenomenal for the game. Owners wanted to push for 17 games for the extra revenue and because they care so much about player safety, but it would’ve been nice.”

He didn’t stop there. Rodgers pushed for a model that would give the league more room to grow the game overseas, while also requiring teams to do more than just show up and play.

“I think there’s great opportunities for expansion in those things. It’d be nice to see them have an international week, because I think it’s great for the game and expansion of the game.

I wish there was a mandate, though, from the league - and they would have to open up their pocketbooks too, you know maybe they’re a little tight on money and stuff - I think they should mandate every team coming over Sunday or Monday to really enjoy the culture of the place you’re going. You can do events in those cities and outreach stuff and community work, but they won’t because they’re a little tight [on money].”

Rodgers’ comments landed in the middle of a milestone night for the league abroad, but he made clear he believes the NFL missed a chance to build international games into something bigger. And if the league ever does change course, it won’t happen with Rodgers around to see it - he said this is his final season.

Aaron Rodgers Just Gave Steelers Fans A New History Debate

Aaron Rodgers added another layer to the rsum Sunday, and it came in a setting that already felt a little different for Pittsburgh. Against the Saints in Paris, the Steelers quarterback kept climbing the NFLs all-time lists, this time nudging past Peyton Manning in career touchdown passes and moving into third place as one of the most prolific passers the league has ever seen.

For Steelers fans, it is the kind of milestone that turns into a debate almost as quickly as it turns into a stat update. Rodgers is still chasing bigger ground in passing yards, and the Week 7 numbers now give Pittsburgh a clearer picture of where he sits in the broader history conversation, even if the next chapter in that climb is still waiting to be written. Steelers Paris Game Will Feature A Look Fans Rarely See

The Steelers are set to bring a different look to Paris for their game against the Saints, blending a familiar road jersey with pieces fans do not often see together. Pittsburgh will pair its white road tops with black pants from the Color Rush set and black helmets, a combination meant to keep the team recognizable while giving the international stage something a little fresh.

Around the locker room, the change has already drawn notice from players such as Nick Herbig and Darnell Washington, who said the uniform stands out from the standard road outfit. For a franchise so closely tied to tradition, even a subtle tweak like this carries some weight, especially when it is being unveiled in a showcase game meant to introduce the Steelers to a wider audience. Steelers Fans Had Every Reason To Be Furious Over This T.J. Watt Reversal

The early sequence of the Steelers game against the Saints had all the ingredients to send the home crowd into a fury. T.J. Watt came screaming off the edge and nearly turned a sack into a turnover, only for the play to go through review and come back in New Orleans favor. Pittsburgh also thought it had another takeaway when a forced fumble was initially ruled in its favor, only for officials to wipe it out after determining the ball carrier had gone to the ground first.

Those reversals made the turnover battle feel like a moving target for much of the night, even as Pittsburgh kept pressing for a break. The Steelers finally got one later when Payton Wilson picked off a pass from Saints quarterback Shough, giving the defense at least one clean takeaway after a stretch of frustration and second-guessing.
