Aaron Rodgers’ latest Steelers get-together sent a message that was hard to miss, even if nobody involved said it out loud.
Rodgers posted photos on Instagram Sunday from a summer retreat that included horseback riding, paddleboarding and campfires, with a handful of his Pittsburgh teammates along for the ride. The group featured DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., Ben Skowronek, Roman Wilson, Pat Freiermuth and Mason Rudolph.
What stood out just as much as who was there was who wasn’t: quarterback Will Howard.
That absence matters because Howard is believed to be in the mix for the backup quarterback job in 2026. Instead, Rudolph was part of the offseason bonding session while Howard was left out of the picture.
It’s still the offseason, so one photo dump doesn’t settle a depth chart. But Howard’s omission was noticeable, especially with Rodgers surrounded by a mix of receivers and two quarterbacks.
Could it have been a scheduling issue? Could Howard have had other plans?
Could he simply not have been invited? Those are the questions that naturally follow.
Rookie quarterback Drew Allar and rookie receiver Germie Bernard also missed the trip, though their absence is easier to explain since they’re rookies.
Even if Rodgers’ invite list was just his own close group, Howard’s absence still jumps off the page. For all the buzz around Howard, he remains a sixth-round draft pick who hasn’t taken a preseason snap in the NFL, much less a meaningful one.
And Rodgers does carry weight in Pittsburgh. The 42-year-old quarterback was able to keep general manager Omar Khan waiting for months this offseason, just as he did the year before.
With the Steelers trying to win now, it would make sense to lean on experience behind Rodgers. Rudolph fits that description: a nine-year veteran who has played in 34 NFL games, started 19 of them, thrown 30 touchdowns and attempted 738 passes in the regular season.
For now, plenty of people around the Steelers believe Rudolph is ahead in the QB2 race. Rodgers’ summer retreat may have only added to that feeling, because Will Howard was nowhere to be found.

Steelers Put Darnell Washington On Notice In Critical Development Year
Darnell Washingtons development remains one of the more interesting subplots for Pittsburgh as he heads into a pivotal season. The tight end has long stood out for his size and rare physical tools, but his frame has also become part of the conversation after he reportedly got as high as 311 pounds during the 2025 season.
Washington recently acknowledged on a podcast that he needs to get his weight under control, a notable admission for a player trying to take the next step in his career. He said the gain came as his body filled out, and he also pointed to a simple mix of food and video games as part of the reason, leaving the Steelers with a clearer picture of where the focus needs to be heading into 2026. Steelers Draft Regret Looks Even Worse With This 2021 Reminder
The Steelers 2021 draft class is looking thinner by the year, and the reminder is especially sharp when you zoom in on the third round. Pat Freiermuth is the lone holdover from that group, while the rest of the class has largely faded from the roster picture, leaving Pittsburgh to live with the choices it made when it tried to rebuild the offensive line.
Kendrick Green has become the clearest symbol of that miss, because the conversation around that pick never really left the draft board. Pittsburgh was looking for help in the interior, and the players it passed on have since turned into the kind of linemen teams spend years trying to find, which only makes the hindsight sting more for a franchise still trying to stabilize that part of the offense.
