Aaron Rodgers is making one thing clear as the Steelers move deeper into the offseason: DK Metcalf has to be central to what Pittsburgh does on offense.
That’s a big statement, but it comes with a real backdrop. Metcalf arrived in Pittsburgh last March via trade, and the Steelers quickly backed that move with a four-year extension.
The production that followed, though, didn’t match the investment. In his first season with the team, Metcalf finished with 59 catches, 850 yards and six touchdowns - a step down from the kind of impact Pittsburgh expected from a receiver who is currently the seventh-highest paid at his position.
Rodgers wants that to change fast.
“We gotta get the ball to DK,” Rodgers said via Mark Kaboly. “He’s our No. 1 for a reason.”
For Metcalf, Year Two carries a different kind of weight. His best season came in 2020, when he totaled 1.303 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The Steelers are also banking on the broader shape of the offense helping him bounce back. With the talent Pittsburgh added this offseason, defenses can’t just key on No. 4 the way they might have before, and that should create more chances for Metcalf in the passing game.
There’s also reason to believe the system can help. Wideouts have produced well in head coach Mike McCarthy’s setup, and Dallas Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb is the clearest example, stacking three straight 1,100-yard seasons from 2022-24, including a 135-catch, 1,749-yard explosion in 2023.
Now the Steelers are asking Metcalf to turn the opportunity into production. Rodgers has already said where the priority needs to be.
