Aaron Rodgers’ return to Pittsburgh was supposed to buy him one more run. After two weeks, Rob Gronkowski is already wondering if the quarterback wishes he had walked away instead.
Rodgers, 42, is in the middle of his 22nd NFL season after choosing to come back with the Steelers this offseason. Retirement was clearly on the table, but he decided to suit up again in the Steel City for what is likely his final year in the league. So far, the results have been rough.
Through two games, Rodgers has completed 59.5% of his passes with one touchdown and one interception. He has also been sacked six times and fumbled twice. Pittsburgh’s offense looked especially flat in Week 2, when the Steelers managed only three points in a loss to the Patriots.
That performance was enough for Gronkowski to start asking the question out loud. Speaking to his former Patriots teammate Julian Edelman in a podcast clip Monday, he said Rodgers may already be second-guessing the decision to return.
“Aaron Rodgers is probably thinking that he should have retired last year,” Gronkowski said to his former Patriots teammate, Julian Edelman, in a podcast clip. “After watching the first two weeks, I’m saying that’s what he was probably thinking.
He may be thinking that if it continues the way it continues for the Steelers. I mean, there’s just no juice on that offensive side of the ball.”
Edelman pushed back on the idea that Rodgers would already be having regrets after just two games, but Gronkowski didn’t move off his stance.
"If you date back out of 150-plus games that [Rodgers and Mike McCarthy] played together, they only went scoreless in touchdowns for Aaron Rodgers throwing a touchdown two games, out of 150-plus when they were together in Green Bay," Gronkowski said.
The Steelers still have time to straighten things out, and the offense is also working through a new playcaller and two new offensive weapons in Michael Pittman Jr. and Rico Dowdle. But the schedule isn’t offering much breathing room. Pittsburgh’s next two games are its first two divisional matchups of the season, and the pressure on McCarthy and Rodgers to get the operation moving is only going to grow.
