Pittsburgh Pirates Uncover Promising Talent at Third Base

As the Pittsburgh Pirates explore options for third base, Nick Yorke is emerging as a surprising contender with potential to fill the gap.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are making some intriguing moves this offseason, addressing key areas like second base with Brandon Lowe, designated hitter with Marcell Ozuna, and adding left-handed power with Ryan O'Hearn. However, third base remains a bit of a mystery. With Ke'Bryan Hayes having departed at last year's trade deadline, the Pirates had a chance to bolster the position but didn't quite seize it.

Jared Triolo is currently penciled in as the starter at third. While he's known for his defensive prowess, even snagging a Gold Glove in 2024, his true calling might be as a versatile utility player. Enter Nick Yorke, a name that's starting to buzz around camp.

Yorke, originally a first-round pick by the Boston Red Sox in 2020, joined the Pirates in a 2024 trade involving Quinn Priester. Although his major league experience is limited-just 114 plate appearances-his potential is undeniable. He has the chance to become Pittsburgh's long-term solution at third base.

Yorke's major league numbers haven't dazzled yet, with a 68 wRC+ over his first 33 games, but his minor league stats tell a different story. In Triple-A, he posted an impressive .938 OPS in 2024 and a solid .754 OPS in 2025.

While his power is still developing, Yorke's contact skills and advanced approach at the plate are promising. He's adept at avoiding strikeouts and has the speed to be a threat on the bases, provided he can improve his on-base percentage.

Defensively, Yorke might not match Triolo's elite glove work, but he's shown he can handle multiple positions. With experience at first, second, third, and both corner outfield spots, his versatility is a significant asset.

The competition for third base isn't fierce. Beyond Triolo, the Pirates lack depth at the position on their 40-man roster.

Nick Gonzales could potentially shift to third, but his defensive metrics at second base (-11 DRS in 2025) suggest it might not be the best fit. If the Pirates want to utilize Triolo's flexibility, Yorke could quickly find himself in the starting lineup.

While this remains speculative as spring training unfolds, the pieces are aligning for Yorke to seize the opportunity at third base. With Brandon Lowe solidifying second base and Konnor Griffin on the horizon for shortstop, Yorke’s path seems clear. Keep an eye on this emerging talent as the Pirates navigate their options.
