The Triple-A Indianapolis Indians, the top minor-league affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, are gearing up to kick off their 2026 season against St. Paul. As the Indians take the field, fans can expect to see some of the most exciting hitting prospects in the game today.
SS Konnor Griffin
Leading the charge is Konnor Griffin, the consensus top prospect who nearly snagged a spot with the Pirates during spring training. Griffin, a standout from the 2024 MLB Draft, has been nothing short of spectacular.
Last season, he hit .333 with a .941 OPS, tallying 23 home runs and 65 stolen bases across three levels. His defensive prowess earned him a minor-league Gold Glove at shortstop.
While he starts the season in Triple-A, don’t be surprised if Griffin makes his major league debut sooner rather than later.
2B Termarr Johnson
Joining Griffin in the infield is Termarr Johnson, another first-round pick from the 2022 draft. Johnson impressed last year at Double-A Altoona, posting a .272 average with a .745 OPS.
Known for his speed, he notched his second consecutive 20-stolen base season. Johnson also showed significant improvement against left-handed pitching, hitting .314 against southpaws.
At just 21, he’s consistently been among the youngest in his league, demonstrating maturity beyond his years.
OF Jhostynxon García
Jhostynxon García made waves during spring training after being acquired from the Red Sox in a multi-player trade. The 23-year-old shone in the Grapefruit League, hitting .405 with a 1.058 OPS.
Though he debuted with Boston last season, much of his time was spent in Triple-A, where he hit .271 with an .833 OPS. García’s performance suggests he’s ready to make a significant impact.
OF Esmerlyn Valdez
Esmerlyn Valdez has quickly climbed the Pirates’ prospect rankings, now sitting as their 11th-best prospect. Last year, he split his time between High-A Greensboro and Altoona, combining for a robust .286/.376/.520 slash line.
Valdez also excelled in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .368 with eight home runs in just 19 games. His power and consistency make him a player to watch.
C/1B Rafael Flores
Rafael Flores, acquired in a trade with the Yankees, will share catching duties with Endy Rodríguez. Flores made his MLB debut at the end of last season, showing promise with a couple of doubles in limited action. In Triple-A, he hit .281 with six home runs, proving to be a reliable bat in the lineup.
Top Pitching Prospects
On the mound, the Indians boast several promising arms. Antwone Kelly posted a 3.02 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 107.1 innings last season.
Wilber Dotel, another key pitcher, recorded a career-high 131 strikeouts. Thomas Harrington, who made brief appearances with the Pirates, earned his first career save.
Meanwhile, reliever Brandan Bidois was nearly untouchable, going 8-0 with a 0.74 ERA across four levels.
With a roster brimming with talent, the Indianapolis Indians are set to make some noise this season. Keep an eye on these prospects as they continue to develop and push for their shot in the majors.
