The Pittsburgh Pirates are turning to Lake Bachar for the series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 23, with the club hoping the right-hander can help keep the road from ending in a sweep.
Manager Don Kelly said Bachar will start at Dodger Stadium, and Carmen Mlodzinski is also available to follow in a bulk role if needed. It will be Bachar’s second start for Pittsburgh.
His first came in the Pirates’ 8-3 win over the Boston Red Sox at PNC Park on Aug. 16.
That outing showed why the Pirates have been willing to lean on him in this kind of spot. Bachar ran into trouble in the second and third innings against Boston, but he worked out of both jams and still finished with three scoreless innings and four strikeouts.
Since arriving from the Miami Marlins at the trade deadline, Bachar has given Pittsburgh steady work. He owns a 3.27 ERA across five appearances and 11.0 innings, with 12 strikeouts, six walks, a .179 BAA and a 1.18 WHIP.
The Pirates used Bachar in relief in the series opener against the Dodgers on Aug. 21 as well. He walked three batters but still managed to get through a scoreless seventh inning.
For Pittsburgh, this is another test of Bachar’s versatility. The hope is that he can cover around three innings before handing things off to Mlodzinski, who could then handle a larger bulk load behind him.
The rotation opening exists because Mitch Keller suffered a right arm teres major muscle injury and was placed on the 60-day injured list, ending his season.
Mlodzinski has already spent two months in the Pirates’ rotation, but his second turn there this year went poorly. In that stretch, he posted a 14.04 ERA, allowed 13 earned runs in 8.1 innings, walked five and struck out five, gave up two home runs and 20 hits, and finished with a 3.00 WHIP, a .455 BAA and a 53.8% hard-hit rate.
Pittsburgh lost all three of those starts, and Mlodzinski’s rough innings put the club in difficult spots early in each game.
He has been far more effective out of the bullpen, where he has a 2.15 ERA this season. He also has bulk work on his resume this year, throwing two such outings against the Washington Nationals on April 15 and the Colorado Rockies on May 14, both at PNC Park, and allowing just two runs over 11 innings in those appearances.
