The Pirates made a pair of roster moves that reshaped both ends of the battery picture: catcher Shawn Ross had his contract selected, while fellow catcher Rafael Flores went on the seven-day concussion-related injured list. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander José Urquidy was designated for assignment.
Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette had already reported that Ross was expected to join the roster in place of Flores.
Flores had only just been back in the majors for a couple of weeks after a left glute strain sent Endy Rodríguez to the IL. He had been working alongside Henry Davis as Pittsburgh’s catching tandem, but now he’ll head to the shelf as well. Per Beazley, Rodríguez is beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis tonight, which points to a return not too far down the road.
For Ross, this is the first big-league call of his career. The 26-year-old signed with the Pirates as a non-drafted free agent in 2022 and has worked his way up the system with a very boom-or-bust offensive profile.
This season, Ross has logged 193 plate appearances across Double-A and Triple-A. He’s hit ten home runs, drawn walks at a hefty 17.1% clip, and struck out in 37.3% of his trips to the plate.
The result is a .181/.325/.432 line and a 97 wRC+. Baseball Prospectus rates him as a subpar framer, though he grades better at blocking and controlling the running game.
Because this is his first major league promotion, he has a full set of options, so if Rodríguez or Flores is ready soon, Ross can be sent back to Triple-A without much hassle.
Urquidy is the odd man out for now. The right-hander signed a one-year, $1.5MM deal with Pittsburgh in February and spent most of the year in a rotation depth role. He did make five relief appearances for the Pirates early in the season before agreeing to an optional assignment to Triple-A.
Since then, the results in the minors have been solid. Urquidy has made 17 Triple-A starts and posted a 3.66 ERA with a 22% strikeout rate, 5.4% walk rate and 42.4% ground ball rate. He’s been even sharper lately, putting up a 1.74 ERA over his last six starts.
Even with that run, Pittsburgh simply didn’t have a spot for him. The club’s rotation is currently Paul Skenes, Braxton Ashcraft, Mitch Keller, Bubba Chandler and Jared Jones, with Wilber Dotel and Carmen Mlodzinski handling long relief. Hunter Barco, Antwone Kelly and Khristian Curtis are also on optional assignment in Triple-A.
That depth pushed Urquidy into DFA limbo, where he can remain for a week. Since waivers take 48 hours, the Pirates have up to five days to gauge trade interest.
There’s a decent chance they’ll get some. Urquidy’s minor league numbers are strong, and he also brings a track record that should appeal to teams looking for pitching help.
From 2019 to 2022, he threw 342 innings for the Astros with a 3.74 ERA, a 20.3% strikeout rate and a 5.2% walk rate. He struggled in 2023, and Tommy John surgery wiped out much of his 2024 and 2025, but his current form in the minors has him back on the radar.
With an affordable salary and injuries piling up around the league, Pittsburgh may have a real chance to find him a new home.
