In a thrilling matchup at Citi Field, the Pittsburgh Pirates faced off against the New York Mets, and it was a game that showcased both promise and growing pains for rookie left-hander Hunter Barco. After making a solid debut last season with three scoreless innings against the Reds, Barco found himself in a high-pressure situation on Saturday.
Entering the game in the 10th inning with the Pirates holding a slim 1-0 lead, Barco faced the challenge head-on. Although the Mets managed to tie the game with Luis Torrens' single, Barco demonstrated poise under pressure.
With the bases loaded and no outs, he delivered a clutch performance by forcing Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto into force outs at home, followed by a flyout from Bo Bichette. This kept the game locked at 1-1.
The Pirates briefly regained the lead in the 11th inning thanks to Bryan Reynolds' infield single, putting them up 2-1. But the Mets weren't done. Barco, still adjusting to his new role in the bullpen after primarily starting in the minors, walked Jorge Polanco and then surrendered a three-run homer to Luis Robert Jr., sealing a 4-2 victory for the Mets.
Despite the loss, which dropped Pittsburgh to 0-2 on the season, Barco's ability to handle the 10th inning's pressure cooker was a silver lining. Reflecting on the experience, Barco noted, "It was definitely a crazy situation.
I had never come into anything like that. I really have to take the experiences out of it."
Pirates manager Don Kelly stood by his decision to place Barco in such a critical situation, emphasizing the learning opportunity it presented. With high-leverage relievers Gregory Soto and Dennis Santana already utilized, Barco's baptism by fire was part of the plan.
Starter Mitch Keller also showed promise in his season debut, pitching six strong innings, allowing just three hits, and striking out three without issuing a walk. It was the 16th time in his career that Keller pitched at least six scoreless innings.
Looking ahead, the Pirates will aim to bounce back in the series finale on Sunday. Carmen Mlodzinski, who has a solid track record against the Mets, will take the mound for Pittsburgh, while rookie Nolan McLane will pitch for New York. Both teams will be eager to make a statement as the early season unfolds.
