Two-plus weeks after the 2026 MLB trade deadline, the Yankees have made another move with the Pirates, this time sending veteran catcher Christian Bethancourt to Pittsburgh for cash considerations.
According to Francys Romero of beisbolfr.com, the deal is now in place, and the Yankees are moving on from a player who had been in Triple-A after being released by the Chicago Cubs in mid-July. Bethancourt signed with New York on July 28 and appeared in eight games at the Triple-A level for the Yankees.
Bethancourt, 34, has been in Major League Baseball since 2013, when he played in one game for the Atlanta Braves. His most recent big-league action came in 2024, and he finished that season with a .608 OPS for the Cubs and Miami Marlins.
At Triple-A this year, Bethancourt showed much better results. He hit .333 with a 1.115 OPS in those eight games for the Yankees, and he posted a .775 OPS with the Cubs in 59 games. That adds up to a 67-game, 230-at-bat sample in the minors this season with an .811 OPS.
For New York, the move looks simple enough: Bethancourt did not appear to be part of the club’s MLB plans this season, so getting cash back for him makes sense. For Pittsburgh, it adds catching depth, which the Pirates clearly needed.
The Yankees had already dealt Camilo Doval to Pittsburgh in a separate trade before the deadline, and this one gives them another post-deadline transaction with the same club.

Pirates Infield Shuffle Puts New Pressure On A Lineup Still Searching
With the Pirates still trying to piece together the right mix on offense, the latest lineup adjustment adds another layer to an infield that has been in motion for much of the season. Oneil Cruzs return and his two-run home run offered a reminder of how much the club still needs from the middle of the order, but Pittsburgh keeps juggling positions as it looks for a combination that can stabilize both the defense and the bats around him.
Nick Gonzales is the newest piece to move, taking over at second base after spending most of the season at third. Brandon Lowe is shifting into designated hitter duty while Jared Triolo stays at third and Jacob Gonzalez remains at shortstop, giving the Pirates a slightly different look as they manage injuries and performance. It is the kind of shuffle that can help in the short term, though it also underscores how much the lineup is still searching for something that lasts. [Read more 🡒]
Braxton Ashcraft Is Giving Pirates Fans Real Reason To Believe
Braxton Ashcraft keeps giving the Pirates something sturdy to build on. After a complete-game start in Miami, he followed it up by working eight efficient innings on 80 pitches in a 4-1 win over Detroit, extending a stretch that has made his August look a lot more like a pitcher settling in than one still trying to find his footing. His previous outing included 10 strikeouts, and over four starts this month his ERA has come down to 2.00.
What has stood out is not just the results, but the way he is getting them. Ashcraft has leaned heavily on his sinker while also showing a faster four-seam fastball, a mix that has played well when his execution is sharp and his competitiveness is front and center. Teammates and coaches have taken notice, and for a Pirates club that can always use another arm to trust, Ashcraft is starting to look like more than a nice short-term story. [Read more 🡒]
