Pirates Linked To Blockbuster Mike Trout Move

Could Mike Trout be the catalyst for the Pittsburgh Pirates to turn around their rocky start to the 2026 season by replacing the struggling Oneil Cruz?

The Pittsburgh Pirates are off to a rocky start in the 2026 season, despite making several offseason moves aimed at turning them into contenders. A significant factor in their struggles has been Oneil Cruz, whose defensive lapses have cost the team runs, and his bat hasn't been much help either.

There's a buzz in the air, as some suggest the Pirates should make a bold move by reaching out to the Los Angeles Angels to acquire MLB superstar Mike Trout. Trout's been on fire this season and could be just the spark the Pirates need.

The Pirates reportedly had their sights set on Kyle Schwarber, offering him a four-year, $125 million deal. Although Schwarber chose to stay in Philly, this shows Pittsburgh's willingness to spend.

They did bring in Brandon Lowe and Ryan O'Hearn, but after dropping two games to the Mets, adding another big bat could be crucial. Trout would not only boost their offense but also provide a defensive upgrade in center field over Cruz.

His remaining contract is around five years and $155.6 million, a bit steeper than the Schwarber offer and carrying some risks due to age and injury history. Still, Trout's impact on both sides of the ball could transform the Pirates into serious contenders in the National League, especially with the anticipated call-up of Konnor Griffin.

Trout's stats this season are eye-popping: a .556/.733/1.222/1.956 slash line with five hits, including two homers, three RBIs, and a stolen base in just three games. In contrast, Cruz is struggling with a .167/.167/.167/.333 line and only one hit in two games.

Trout is currently in the eighth year of a 12-year, $426.5 million contract. While this is about $30 million more than what the Pirates offered Schwarber, considering Trout's potential impact, it might just be the investment Pittsburgh needs to make.
