As the 2026 MLB season approaches, all eyes are on Konnor Griffin and his potential debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The buzz is building around this top prospect, and former MLB general manager Steve Phillips has weighed in, predicting Griffin will make his big-league debut on March 26.
Phillips, speaking on MLB Network’s “Hot Stove,” expressed confidence in the 19-year-old's readiness to make an immediate impact. He believes Griffin is not only capable but should spend the entire season in the majors.
“I think he makes the team on Opening Day,” Phillips remarked. “I think it’s the right thing for the Pirates.”
There’s more than just talent at stake. If Griffin takes home the National League Rookie of the Year honors, the Pirates would snag some valuable draft-pick compensation. Plus, regardless of when he’s promoted, finishing first or second in the award voting would earn him a year of service time, making a midseason call-up a potentially costly gamble.
The Pirates have bolstered their lineup with offseason additions like Brandon Lowe, Ryan O’Hearn, and Marcell Ozuna, which could ease Griffin’s transition. This supportive cast means Griffin won't have to shoulder the offensive load from the get-go.
“This lineup is such that he’s got some protection that he doesn’t feel like, ‘I have to go be the guy.’ He will be the guy, though,” Phillips confidently stated.
“I mean, this kid is unbelievable.”
Griffin's rise through the ranks has been nothing short of meteoric. Dominating the minors, he’s now the top name in nearly every preseason prospect ranking, boasting a .333/.415/.527 slash line with 21 home runs and 65 stolen bases last season.
However, making the leap to the majors is no small feat, especially for someone who started last year in Single-A and only spent 21 games in Double-A. Pirates manager Don Kelly acknowledged the challenge, calling it “a really tough ask” for the young phenom, but that doesn’t rule out Griffin earning his shot.
As the countdown to Opening Day continues, the excitement around Griffin’s potential debut is palpable. If he lives up to the hype, the Pirates-and their fans-could be in for something special this season.
