Pirates Just Spotlighted Four Farmhands Fans Need To Know

Rising stars in the Pittsburgh Pirates' farm system are celebrated for their remarkable achievements and promise for the future as the team announces its annual minor league awards.

The Pittsburgh Pirates handed out their minor league honors on Oct. 21, recognizing four players who made their mark in different ways across the farm system in 2026.

Murf Gray, Yordanny De Los Santos, Jesus Castillo and Derek Diamond each walked away with an annual award from the organization, and all four put together seasons that stood out for very different reasons.

Gray took home the Willie Stargell Slugger of the Year Award after leading all Pirates minor leaguers with 32 home runs. That total tied for the fourth-most by any player in the system since 1999, and he spread the power across three stops: eight homers with Single-A Bradenton, 15 with High-A Greensboro and nine with Double-A Altoona. The Pirates selected Gray 73rd overall in the 2025 MLB Draft out of Fresno State, and he could be positioned as the franchise’s next third baseman if he keeps building momentum in 2027.

De Los Santos earned the Omar Moreno Baserunner of the Year Award after swiping 45 bases in 61 attempts, tops among Pirates minor leaguers. Stealing bags has been a steady part of his game for years, with totals of 14 in 2022, 22 in 2023, 34 in 2024 and a career-high 51 in 2025.

He also turned in a productive year at Greensboro, hitting .261/.333/.481 with an .814 OPS in 87 games, piling up 94 hits, 26 doubles, 17 home runs and 63 RBI. MLB Pipeline ranks him 14th among the Pirates’ top 30 prospects, and he’ll need to carry that talent into Double-A Altoona next season.

Castillo was named the Bill Mazeroski Defender of the Year after putting together a remarkably versatile defensive season. He handled seven positions - everything except pitcher and catcher - while committing just nine errors in 288 total chances for a .969 fielding percentage.

He did that across 100 games and five different levels. He joins some notable company in the award’s history, with Konnor Griffin having won it last year and also earning an MiLB Gold Glove Award.

Diamond rounded out the group by winning the Kent Tekulve Reliever of the Year Award after a strong run across four minor league levels. In 37 outings and two starts, he went 7-0 with a 2.48 ERA over 58 innings, striking out 57 and walking nine while posting a .231 BAA and a 1.02 WHIP.

Most of that work came at Triple-A, where he went 5-0 in 29 outings and two starts with a 3.14 ERA over 43 innings, 39 strikeouts, eight walks, a .259 BAA and a 1.19 WHIP. The 2022 sixth-round pick out of Mississippi could be in line for a look with the Pirates next season if he keeps it going.

Pirates Trade Idea Solves A Real Need At A Dangerous Price

The Pirates are still hunting for right-handed power, and Hunter Goodman has the kind of profile that makes sense on paper. The Colorado catcher brings offensive juice from a spot that is often light at the plate, and his availability in trade chatter naturally gets Pittsburghs attention as the club looks for more impact without sacrificing the long view.

The catch is that premium catchers come at a premium price, and Goodman would be no exception. The cost to pry him loose would test the Pirates prospect depth in a way that goes well beyond a simple one-for-one deal, which is why the discussion quickly shifts from fit to risk and from immediate help to what it would do to the organizations flexibility down the road. Pirates Could Have Their Eye On A Versatile Rays Pitching Upgrade

The Pirates are again being linked to a possible pitching upgrade, this time with Tampa Bay right-hander Griffin Jax drawing attention because of the flexibility he could bring to a staff that can always use more options. Jax has worked both as a starter and out of the bullpen, which makes him an appealing fit for a club that values depth and adaptability, and Pittsburghs existing trade relationship with the Rays only adds to the intrigue.

What makes the idea more interesting is the way Jax handled his move into Tampa Bays rotation, showing enough production there to suggest he can do more than just fill a middle-inning role. For the Pirates, any move involving a pitcher with that kind of range would naturally come with some real consideration, but for now it remains only a possibility rather than anything confirmed. Pirates Prospect Termarr Johnson Suddenly Faces A Harsh Fight Back

Termarr Johnsons path through the Pirates system has hit a major detour at a time when he was already under pressure to show progress at the plate. The former first-round pick reached Triple-A Indianapolis, but his latest season left plenty to sort through after a disappointing offensive showing and questions about whether his bat was keeping pace with his pedigree.

Now there is an added layer of concern around his long-term outlook in the organization. Johnsons development had already been scrutinized as other Pirates prospects moved forward, and his future role is suddenly far less clear after the setback in Indianapolis, leaving Pittsburgh with one more uncertain piece in a farm system that had hoped to see him regain momentum.
