The Pirates have shut down Braxton Ashcraft for now, placing the right-hander on the 15-day injured list retroactive to September 7 because of discomfort in his throwing arm.
Pittsburgh filled the roster opening by calling up a right-hander from Triple-A Indianapolis. Ashcraft’s setback comes with the club still hoping to squeeze some value out of the final stretch, even if the calendar is working against it.
Manager Don Kelly told MLB.com’s Jason Mackey and other reporters that Ashcraft won’t pitch again in 2026, though tests are still being run to figure out exactly what’s behind the soreness. Kelly also said there wasn’t any sign yet of a structural issue.
Ashcraft’s last outing came on September 5, when he gave up three runs on seven hits across five innings in the Pirates’ 6-1 loss to the Angels. He has already piled up 165 1/3 innings this season, a huge jump from his previous professional high of 118 total innings between the majors and minors in 2025.
If the tests don’t uncover anything serious, the arm trouble could simply be the result of that workload. Ashcraft did miss the entire 2022 season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.
The timing stings for a Pirates team still trying to finish above .500 for the first time since 2018. Pittsburgh sits at 73-73 and is five games out of a wild card spot, so the postseason path is fading, but there’s still a clear target in front of them.
Ashcraft has been one of the biggest reasons the rotation has held together. He’s posted a 3.65 ERA with a 25.9% strikeout rate and a 5.2% walk rate over those 165 1/3 innings.
That walk rate sits in the 95th percentile among all pitchers, and his 37% chase rate has also stood out. Add in above-average strikeout, barrel, and grounder numbers, and it’s been a strong first full MLB season for Ashcraft, especially after he logged a 2.71 ERA over 69 2/3 innings as a rookie in 2025.
His rise helped offset some of the drop-off from Paul Skenes, whose 2026 season has been merely pretty good after looking great in 2024-25. Bubba Chandler and Jared Jones have also been solid at best, which leaves the Pirates’ rotation a little below expectations. Their 4.25 starter ERA ranks 17th out of 30 teams.
Even so, there’s enough talent in that group to make the Pirates interesting down the road. A rotation built around Skenes, Ashcraft, Chandler, and Jones could be dangerous in 2027 if the starters take another step, the bullpen stabilizes, and the lineup keeps surging.
Ashcraft had been lined up to start tomorrow against the Cubs, so Pittsburgh will likely need a bullpen game on short notice. Antwone Kelly is expected to handle multiple innings and could be in position to fill Ashcraft’s rotation spot in a piggyback or bulk role.

Pirates Still Have Two Lineup Questions They Cannot Dodge This Winter
As the Pirates head into another crucial winter, the familiar conversation around lineup certainty is already starting to take shape. Catcher remains a major question, with Henry Davis, Endy Rodrguez and Rafael Flores Jr. all part of the mix, and second base is another spot that needs a clearer answer after the club leaned on Brandon Lowe for offense there. It is the kind of roster puzzle that can quietly define an offseason, especially for a team still trying to turn long-term ideas into dependable production.
What Pittsburgh cannot afford this time is to treat those openings like placeholders and hope the answers arrive later on their own. The organization needs a real plan at catcher and at second, not just a collection of names and a timeline built around development or recovery. The Pirates have spent enough winters talking about upside and possibility, and this one figures to test how ready they are to make firm choices instead. [Read more 🡒]
Pirates Rotation Pressure Just Got Worse With Braxton Ashcraft Concern
Braxton Ashcrafts rapid rise from a lower-workload role to a meaningful part of the Pirates rotation picture hit a snag this week, as the right-hander was placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to Sept. 7 because of right arm discomfort. Early indications suggest the issue does not appear structural, but testing is still ongoing, leaving the club to wait and see how long it might be without one of its more intriguing arms.
For Pittsburgh, the timing adds another layer of strain to a rotation that already has Mitch Keller on the injured list. Ashcrafts workload had jumped significantly from the previous season, and the Pirates were trying to see how much he could handle as the year wore on. Instead, they are now juggling another pitching question at a point in the schedule where every healthy starter matters. [Read more 🡒]
Pirates Suddenly Face A Braxton Ashcraft Concern They Didn't Expect
Braxton Ashcrafts latest turn for the Pirates has been put on hold, with the right-hander landing on the 15-day injured list because of right arm discomfort. The move forced Pittsburgh to bring up Antwone Kelly from Triple-A Indianapolis, a reminder of how quickly a pitching staff can get thinned out even when the initial diagnosis does not sound especially severe.
Don Kelly said the concern does not appear to be structural, but the club is still running further tests as it tries to get a clearer read on the situation. For a Pirates team that has leaned on finding reliable arms wherever it can, the timing is less than ideal, and the next update on Ashcrafts condition could shape how the bullpen and rotation pieces are shuffled in the days ahead.
