The Pirates opened September by adding a lefty arm and a backup catcher, turning their first set of roster moves in the season’s final month into a straightforward depth play.
Brandon Eisert is back from Triple-A Indianapolis, and Christian Bethancourt is having his contract selected from Indianapolis as well. Bethancourt now joins both the 28-man roster and the 40-man roster.
To make room, Pittsburgh moved catcher Endy Rodríguez from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list after his season-ending surgery on his left hip labrum. Because September rosters expand from 26 to 28 players, the Pirates did not need to option anyone to Triple-A for the transactions.
Eisert gives Pittsburgh another left-handed option in the bullpen, where he joins Mason Montgomery, Evan Sisk and Gregory Soto. Bethancourt provides insurance behind the plate, giving the club an extra catcher after Henry Davis and rookie Rafael Flores Jr. were the only catchers on the 40-man roster.
That extra depth matters for a Pirates team that has already taken hits at the position. Rodríguez is done for the year, Joey Bart was traded to the Atlanta Braves on June 18, and Shawn Ross was designated for assignment before the New York Mets picked him up.
Eisert’s path back up is a notable one. He arrived in a July 10 trade with the Chicago White Sox, along with shortstop Jacob Gonzalez, while the Pirates sent the 34th overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft and left-handed pitching prospect Jaden Woods. His first stretch with Pittsburgh was rough, as he posted a 7.71 ERA over seven innings with a .345 batting average allowed and a 2.00 WHIP.
Sent to Indianapolis on Aug. 4, Eisert settled in quickly. Over 10 appearances and 13.0 innings, he put up a 2.08 ERA with 18 strikeouts to three walks, a .093 BAA and a 0.54 WHIP.
Bethancourt’s arrival also came through a trade. The Pirates acquired him on Aug. 19 after the New York Yankees designated him for assignment two days earlier. He hasn’t appeared in MLB since late 2024 with the Chicago Cubs, but he brings 428 games of experience across eight seasons and gives Pittsburgh a steady third catching option.
