Pirates Insider Reveals Leading Contender for Coveted Fifth Starter Position

Pirates' pitching staff gains potential ace as Jose Urquidy emerges as the top contender for the fifth starter role ahead of the 2026 season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are gearing up for the 2026 season with a starting rotation that promises to be a key strength. With Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Bubba Chandler, and Braxton Ashcraft likely locking down four of the spots, the big question is who will claim the fifth.

Enter Jose Urquidy, the latest addition to the Pirates' roster, who seems to be the frontrunner for that final starting position. Pirates beat writer Jason Mackey recently highlighted Urquidy’s strong candidacy, noting his impressive track record and unique pitching style.

Urquidy, who joined the Pirates on a one-year deal this February, has spent the past seven years with the Houston Astros. His career stats include a 27-16 record, a 4.00 ERA, and 329 strikeouts over 407 1/3 innings. Notably, his changeup has given him reverse splits, making him a potentially valuable asset at PNC Park.

While there’s talk of possibly adding a left-handed starter to the mix, Urquidy’s current form and experience make him a solid choice. Adding to the excitement, the Pirates’ pitching staff, including Urquidy, has been working with former All-Star A.J. Burnett during spring training, thanks to an invitation from manager Don Kelly.

As the Pirates look to make a mark this season, Urquidy’s presence in the rotation could be a pivotal factor in their success.
