Wilber Dotel is moving in the right direction, and the Pirates finally have some encouraging signs on the injured right-hander’s rehab path.
Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said on The Pirates Insider Show on 93.7 The Fan on July 5 that Dotel hit 98 mph during a recent live batting practice and came out of it feeling good, which sets him up for another rehab outing.
“He threw a live [BP], up to 98 [mph] during that live. It’s is a good indication that he’s, if you’re going to hit 98 [mph] in a live BP, it’s usually maybe a tick extra in a real game," Cherington said.
"It’s a good indication that the velo is there, he’s feeling good. He came out of that reporting feeling really well..."
Dotel has been out since landing on the 15-day injured list on June 13 with a right lat muscle strain. He had already started a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on June 27, but that outing lasted just one inning, short of the two innings he was supposed to cover.
Cherington said the Pirates weren’t dealing with a new injury issue after that appearance. The concern was more about how Dotel felt afterward, which led the team to slow things down and reset.
“When he had pitched in Altoona that time and we kind of hit pause, there wasn’t any concern about injury," Cherington said. "He just didn’t report feeling as well as we wanted him to report feeling and so we decided, ‘Alright, let’s just take a couple days and settle this thing down.’
"So we went back into a live BP. Came out of that feeling really good. Anticipate him now getting into a rehab outing, a minor league rehab outing sometime earlier this week, hopefully Tuesday.”
That puts Dotel back on the path toward returning to Pittsburgh after a strong start to his major league season. The Pirates brought him up on April 19, sent him back to Triple-A Indianapolis on April 28, then recalled him again on May 20.
Before the injury slowed him down, Dotel looked like a useful middle-relief weapon. His four-seam fastball averaged 98.1 mph, and he gave the Pirates efficient innings in his early work. Over his first seven outings and 16.2 innings, he allowed just two earned runs for a 1.08 ERA, while striking out 17 and walking five.
He also put together three straight outings of three scoreless innings in his second stint, and in his first stint he threw four perfect relief innings against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 27.
His last two outings before going on the injured list were rough, though, with 10 earned runs allowed over 1.2 innings. The injury may have played a part in that drop-off.
For now, the Pirates are banking on the latest live BP being the reset Dotel needed, with another rehab assignment expected to be the next step.

Pirates Just Got A Brutal Konnor Griffin Update At The Worst Time
Konnor Griffin had only just worked his way back into the Pirates lineup and was starting to look like a steady presence at shortstop again before another setback hit. The rookie had been giving Pittsburgh a welcome boost with his bat and overall production, which made the timing of this latest injury especially frustrating for a club trying to find any kind of rhythm in the middle of the season.
The Pirates now have to decide how aggressive to be with the 20-year-old, because there is at least some thought that he could try to play through it. More likely, though, is a cautious path that keeps him out long enough to heal properly and gives Pittsburgh a chance to get him back later in the year, if the rehab goes the way it needs to. Pirates Linked To A Deadline Arm They Desperately Need
The Pirates are being tied to a left-handed arm as the trade deadline approaches, and the fit is easy to understand. Pittsburgh is looking for pitching help, especially in the bullpen, where left-handed depth has been a need, and the front office appears more likely to chase relief help than spend its biggest chips on the starting rotation.
Washingtons place in the playoff race is what makes this one tricky. The Nationals have reason to keep listening but no obvious reason to move a pitcher who has helped them this season, and Pittsburghs search for bullpen reinforcements could still lead them toward a closer or another late-inning option instead of a more versatile arm. Pirates Injury Picture Just Got More Urgent Before Second Half
The Pirates got a little relief on the injury front as the All-Star break approaches, with Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz both moving in the right direction and trending toward a return shortly after the pause. Cruz has been progressing well from left hand fractures, while Horwitz is also coming along from a left hamstring strain, giving Pittsburgh a chance to get two important pieces back as the second half gets underway.
Wilber Dotel is still working through his own recovery from a lat strain and is set for another minor-league rehab appearance as part of that process. The bigger concern, though, is Endy Rodrguez, who left a recent game with left side discomfort and remains under evaluation, adding another layer of uncertainty to a roster that could use a cleaner bill of health once the schedule flips.
