The Dodgers will try to wrap up their series against the Pirates on Saturday at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium, and they’ll do it with a reshuffled lineup after a tough night Friday.
Los Angeles opened the set with a 5-4 walk-off win in 10 innings, sealed by Tommy Edman’s RBI single. The victory came with a cost, though, as center fielder Andy Pages fractured his hand and is expected to miss significant time.
After the game, manager Dave Roberts didn’t hide how much the injury stung.
“It’s just really unfortunate, obviously,” Roberts said. “It’s not season-ending, because obviously things like that is four or five weeks.
So I would expect him back, knowing him, on the earlier side. There’s still time in the season for him to be back, but I feel for him because he was having such a good year and he likes to play.
But yeah, we’ve got to move on and hold down the fort until he’s back.”
To fill the roster spot, the Dodgers are bringing up outfielder Alek Thomas. He gives them a strong glove in center field, and the club is hoping there’s more offense in there after some work on his swing.
Saturday’s lineup also includes Ben Rortvedt behind the plate.
On the mound, the Dodgers will turn to Tarik Skubal for his fourth start since arriving in Los Angeles. The left-hander, a reigning two-time Cy Young award winner, has given up six earned runs - seven total - over 17 innings with the Dodgers for a 3.18 ERA. On the year, he’s at 2.85 with 135 strikeouts in 113.2 innings.
Pittsburgh will counter with right-hander Jared Jones, who enters with a 4.78 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 64 innings. He already saw the Dodgers once this season, holding them to two runs on three hits over four innings on June 10.
First pitch is set for 4:15 p.m. PT/7:15 p.m.
