At some point, the Paul Skenes-to-the-Yankees chatter has to cross from relentless into ridiculous. Jon Heyman may have pushed it there.
In his latest New York Post column, Heyman tried to build a Yankees link to Skenes through Livvy Dunne’s apartment hunt. Dunne, Skenes’ girlfriend, reportedly tried to buy Babe Ruth’s former Upper West Side apartment last summer.
She didn’t land it and later found a different place elsewhere in New York. That should have been the whole story.
Instead, Heyman wrote that “Yankees people” saw Dunne’s interest in Ruth’s old apartment with “deep interest” and took it as a possible sign that Skenes might someday want to wear pinstripes. It’s a wild stretch.
Heyman asked Skenes about it, and the Pirates ace gave the most straightforward answer possible. Dunne likes baseball, Babe Ruth is Babe Ruth, and showing interest in an apartment once occupied by one of the most famous athletes in American history does not amount to a secret free-agency message to the Yankees.
"That's probably reading a little deeper into it than what is true," Skenes told Heyman.
Probably is doing a lot of work there. This is reading so far into it that it feels like tunneling.
The Yankees-Skenes connection has now been assembled from a few different pieces: the Yankees reportedly asked the Pirates about him, his eventual price tag will be enormous, he happened to pitch in a series at Yankee Stadium and now his girlfriend nearly bought Babe Ruth’s old apartment. That is a lot of mileage out of very little.
The whole thing gets even more absurd when you look at Skenes’ actual responses. When asked about the Yankees, he didn’t lean into the mythology or the mystique.
He said he hoped the Pirates swept them. When asked about his priorities, he said he wants to win.
And right now, the Pirates are giving him a real team to win with. Pittsburgh spent the offseason in the way its fans have wanted for years, raising payroll, adding legitimate major league talent and building a club that entered this Yankees series in the National League playoff conversation. Skenes told Heyman how much he has enjoyed that.
Still, the conversation keeps drifting back to when the Yankees might get him, as if Pittsburgh’s current roster and current push barely matter.
That’s where the broader issue comes into focus. Heyman wrote that the Pirates have “practically no chance” to extend Skenes under baseball’s current economic system because he could eventually command more than $50 million annually.
Maybe that’s true. But it also undercuts the idea that the sport’s payroll imbalance is some harmless quirk.
You can’t spend years telling fans of teams like the Pirates that baseball’s economic setup is just fine, then turn around and casually note that Pittsburgh has almost no chance to keep the best pitcher it has developed in decades because wealthier clubs will simply outbid them. Both things can’t be true at once.
That’s why this kind of national coverage wears on small-market fans. Skenes isn’t close to free agency.
He isn’t asking out. The Pirates aren’t shopping him.
They aren’t even selling at the deadline. He’s under control for years, and Pittsburgh is trying to make the playoffs.
Yet the storyline still keeps circling back to whether his girlfriend’s apartment search means he secretly wants to be a Yankee.
The Yankees can want Skenes. Every team would.
They can keep asking about him every deadline until Pittsburgh stops picking up. But turning Dunne’s interest in Babe Ruth’s apartment into trade speculation is just fantasy dressed up as reporting.
