Paul Skenes’ latest trip to the beach has turned into part of the conversation around his recent struggles.
The Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander was spotted in Key Biscayne, Florida, with girlfriend and social media star Olivia “Livvy” Dunne before the club’s series against the Miami Marlins. The Daily Mail noted that Skenes was shirtless during the outing, and the sighting quickly fed online chatter about a possible “dad bod” as his season has dipped.
That speculation is tied to reporting from John Perrotto, who suggested that Skenes’ recent issues could be connected to his “weight gain.” In his report, Perrotto said “multiple people” have claimed Skenes “looks heavier this season and less athletic.” He also raised “the possibility of carrying extra weight slowing down his delivery and causing the drop in his fastball velocity.”
Others, according to the Daily Mail, think the problem is something different: that Skenes’ arm has been “overworked,” which they believe has contributed to the slump. However it’s being explained, the Pirates are clearly hoping for a quick turnaround.
The numbers show just how rough things have gotten. Pittsburgh is 58-64, while Skenes owns a 3.88 ERA, the highest of his career by almost two runs. He is also 9-11, which is the worst record of his career.
His recent outings have been especially bumpy. He has allowed four runs in each of his last two starts, and in the two games before that he gave up five runs apiece.

That downturn stands out because of how fast Skenes has already risen. In three seasons, he has made three All-Star teams. The Pirates took him first overall in the 2023 MLB Draft out of LSU.
His rookie year brought an All-Star selection and NL Rookie of the Year honors, along with his first All-MLB First Team nod. The next season, he repeated on the All-MLB First Team and won the NL Cy Young Award.
