PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Pirates have been feeling the absence of their dynamic center fielder, Oneil Cruz, but there's a silver lining on the horizon. Cruz's rehabilitation is showing promising signs, fueling hope for his return to the lineup.
Pirates general manager Ben Cherington shared some encouraging news on The Pirates Insider Show, revealing that Cruz is set to continue his rehab journey in Bradenton, Florida, the team's Spring Training haven.
Cruz, who has been sidelined for most of June due to a fractured left hand, is making steady progress. The cast has come off, and he's begun gripping exercises, which is a significant milestone in his recovery.
"Yeah, he’s reporting improvement every day, feeling better," Cherington shared. "He is starting to grip. He’s heading to Florida this week and we’re anticipating that that progression will pick up as he gets to Florida."
Cruz's injury, sustained during a slide into home plate against the Atlanta Braves, landed him on the 10-day injured list as of June 10. The Pirates, meanwhile, are gearing up for a road trip, with matchups against the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals on the horizon.
For Cruz, staying focused on his rehab in Florida is crucial. The controlled environment allows him to concentrate on regaining full fitness without the distractions of road games. Shortstop Konnor Griffin recently benefited from a similar stint in Bradenton, returning to action after recovering from a right forearm flexor strain.
Cherington emphasized the importance of this move, explaining that Florida provides the perfect setting for Cruz to ramp up baseball activities. "When you hear a player heading to Florida, it typically means that it’s time that they’re going to start ramping up baseball activities," he noted.
"Especially on the road, there’s usually only a single cage. So if you want to get hitting done, you’re kind of waiting for the 13 active players to get done.
So we usually transition that to Florida and that’s where Oneil is headed.”
The start of gripping exercises is a pivotal step in Cruz's recovery, signaling that his hand is healing and setting the stage for him to eventually swing a bat and return to form. While the timeline for his return remains uncertain, Cherington is optimistic about seeing Cruz back in action in July, with more clarity expected by the All-Star break.
“If you’re betting that’s fair, we’ll see," Cherington said. "Certainly into July and as we get closer to the All-Star break.
We’ll see where we are. We want to make sure he’s in a good spot…”
