The Steelers got a little more clarity on Joey Porter Jr. this week, but not a full answer.
Head coach Mike McCarthy said Porter Jr. will be evaluated on Wednesday as Pittsburgh starts turning its attention to a Week 3 meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals. Porter Jr. has already missed the Steelers’ first two games, and his status has been tied to both a back injury and an “NIR/conditioning” designation ahead of the Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots.
“Joey's in this situation where he had a back thing that flared up in practice, and we're taking a look at it. He'll be evaluated on Wednesday and see what he can do in practice come Wednesday,” McCarthy said.
Porter Jr., 26, has been dealing with the back issue since training camp, which is what put him on the PUP list in the first place. His contract situation has also hovered over the story, with no new deal in place, but McCarthy’s latest update points back to the injury as the immediate issue. The coach said the back flared up in practice last week, and that lines up with Porter Jr. leaving practice with a trainer on September 17.
There had been some hope after Pittsburgh’s Week 1 win over the Atlanta Falcons that Porter Jr. was headed toward a bigger role in practice. That didn’t happen. Instead, he remained limited all last week, just as he had been leading into the season opener.
That leaves his Week 3 availability in the air for now, even with the Bengals coming to Acrisure Stadium. The matchup brings Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins into the picture, so Porter Jr.’s practice participation over the next few days should say plenty about whether he can go.
There also does not appear to be any contract resolution coming soon. The Steelers are not negotiating in-season, so an extension is off the table for now.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Porter Jr. has considered getting a second opinion on his back. Schefter also said the Steelers are planning on him to “potentially return” vs. Cincinnati, though that still does not guarantee he’ll be active if the injury keeps him sidelined.
CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson reported before the Patriots game that someone in the organization told her Porter Jr. had been cleared of his back injury and is “expected to be in good enough football shape,” with the final call on suiting up left to him.
For Pittsburgh, the situation can’t keep hanging around much longer. Whether Porter Jr. is available in Week 3 or not, the Steelers need some kind of resolution soon.

Pirates Prospect Murf Gray Is Rising Faster Than Fans Expected
Murf Grays first professional season gave the Pirates plenty to feel good about, and not just because he ended the year in Double-A Altoona. The 2026 rise was quick even by the standards of a prospect who keeps forcing his way up the ladder, as Gray moved through three levels while putting together a .305 average, a .969 OPS and 32 home runs.
