In his much-anticipated New York Mets debut, right-hander Freddy Peralta had a rollercoaster of a game, but ultimately played a key role in securing an 11-7 Opening Day victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. While his performance on the mound wasn't flawless, Peralta's impact was undeniable, and he was quick to acknowledge the electric atmosphere at Citi Field.
Peralta was clearly energized by the passionate Mets fans who filled the stadium. "The energy from the first pitch to the last one, you can feel it," he shared.
"It was amazing. I think personally it’s something that helps me to get better.
I can’t wait to see it that same way the rest of the season."
The game had its challenges, notably when Pittsburgh's Brandon Lowe launched a two-run homer off Peralta in the first inning and followed with a solo shot in the third. Reflecting on these moments, Peralta said, "I don’t see the first one as a mistake, but it’s part of the game. The other one, yeah, it was a mistake."
Despite these setbacks, Peralta's teammates rallied in support, putting up five runs in the bottom of the first inning, a response that left Peralta in awe. "It was amazing," he said. "I asked them earlier, 'I need some runs from you guys,' and I was sitting there like, 'damn, this is crazy.'"
Peralta finished his outing allowing four earned runs on six hits, striking out seven over five innings to notch his first win with the Mets. His ability to bounce back and the team’s offensive firepower were key to the victory.
Looking ahead, Peralta's contract situation looms large. He's set to reach free agency after this season, and while there's hope for an extension with the Mets, it seems negotiations are at a standstill. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, "Word is the Mets and Freddy Peralta are far enough apart on an extension that there isn't much optimism anything will be done soon, and perhaps even before free agency."
As the season unfolds, both Peralta’s performance and his contract talks will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
