Sidney Crosby's Next Contract Keeps Penguins Facing A Bigger Question

As Sidney Crosby deliberates his future with the Pittsburgh Penguins, fans anticipate a short-term deal extending his legendary career beyond the 2026-27 season.

Sidney Crosby is heading toward another contract decision, and the signs point to a familiar kind of timeline. The Pittsburgh Penguins captain is entering the final season of his current two-year, $17.4 million deal, and a new agreement could be in place before training camp opens.

Josh Yohe of The Athletic said Crosby’s last extension may offer the best clue for what comes next. Crosby signed that two-year contract on Sept. 16, 2024, just before camp, and Yohe believes the next one could follow the same path.

“The smart money would be on Crosby signing a new deal sometime between now and the middle of September. That’s how it went before; that’s the timeline Crosby is comfortable with, and a new contract seems inevitable.”

The length of the next contract is still the biggest unknown. A short-term deal appears to be the likeliest outcome, with one or two years both in play. Crosby can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2027, but the expectation is that he’ll remain in Pittsburgh beyond the 2026-27 season.

Crosby himself has already made one thing clear: retirement is not on his mind. When Yohe asked him about the idea that 2026-27 could be his final season while they were at the IIHF World Championship in Switzerland in May, Crosby’s answer was simple.

“Not at all," Crosby said.

That same conversation also shed light on how Crosby approaches his deals. He has long preferred to handle contracts on a year-to-year basis, even if he’s still open to something longer if the situation fits.

“Yeah, I’m saying year to year based on contracts,” Crosby said, as quoted by Josh Yohe. “It just seems to make sense.

I mean, it could change. We’ll see.

Kyle (Dubas) and I haven’t even talked about it. But I’ll talk with Pat (Brisson) and Kyle later this summer.

We’ll talk about it and do what makes sense.”

He added that a longer commitment is still on the table if it works for both sides.

“If it does make sense to sign for a couple of years, then we’ll do that.”

For now, Crosby is coming off another productive season. He put up 74 points in 68 games in 2025-26, scoring 26 goals and adding 48 assists while missing about four weeks because of an injury. It was the 21st season of his career in which he averaged at least a point per game.

Crosby has spent his entire NHL career in Pittsburgh, and he has led the Penguins to three Stanley Cup championships.

Kyle Dubas Early Penguins Moves Are Fueling An Offseason Debate

Kyle Dubas has already made this Pittsburgh offseason feel busier than the standings would suggest, with the Penguins new general manager wasting little time getting to work on roster decisions and possible trade paths. In a summer crowded with unsigned restricted free agents and teams across the league staring down difficult contract calls, Pittsburghs approach has stood out because Dubas has been willing to act early rather than let the calendar do the pressure work for him.

For Penguins fans, that has created its own debate: whether these moves are the start of a clearer direction or just the opening stage of a longer reshaping of the roster. Around the NHL, other front offices are still sorting through their own unfinished business, but Pittsburghs situation has drawn attention because Dubas has already shown a willingness to be proactive while the rest of the league waits for some of those bigger decisions to come into focus. Penguins May Have Found A Future Playmaker Fans Should Watch

Markus Ruck is starting to look like one of those draft picks fans circle on the calendar, even with his path still several steps from the NHL. The Penguins grabbed the playmaking center in the second round, 39th overall, shortly after his twin brother Liam went in the first round, and he quickly backed up the attention with a standout season for the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Ruck finished with 108 points in 68 games in 2025-26, leading the WHL in scoring while driving offense as a distributor through the middle of the ice. He is slated to return to Medicine Hat for the 2026-27 season before moving on to the University of North Dakota in 2027-28, a timeline that gives Pittsburgh a little more patience but also a better sense that it may have found a future playmaker worth tracking closely. Sidney Crosbys Next Penguins Contract Carries One Huge Question

Sidney Crosbys future remains one of the biggest long-range storylines hanging over the Penguins, even with more than two seasons still to play before his current deal runs out. The captain is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2027, and the timing alone makes his next contract a major point of interest for a franchise still built around his presence and leadership.

For now, the only certainty is that the conversation has not formally begun, even if the expectation is that it will come before summers end. Crosby has already given the clearest hint about where this is headed, saying he is open to a one- or two-year extension while brushing aside retirement speculation, which at least keeps the focus on how long hell stay rather than whether hes done.
