PITTSBURGH - In a showdown between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Carolina Hurricanes, it was Carolina who dominated, cruising to a 5-1 victory. The Penguins' usually reliable penalty kill stumbled, allowing three power play goals, marking a tough afternoon for Pittsburgh.
This loss was a significant one for the Penguins, as it ended their impressive 18-game points streak against Metropolitan Division rivals. Despite the setback, their division record remains strong at 11-2-9.
The game started with a bang for the Hurricanes. Just 25 seconds in, Penguins defenseman Ryan Graves, filling in for the injured Ryan Shea, was penalized for tripping.
Carolina capitalized swiftly, with Sebastian Aho scoring just 47 seconds into the first period. His shot, deflected by Connor Dewar and screened by Jordan Staal, slipped past Penguins goalie Stuart Skinner, giving Carolina an early lead.
Despite being outshot 9-5, Pittsburgh managed to keep the deficit to one by the end of the first period.
The second period saw the Hurricanes extend their lead with precision on the power play. After a miscue by Noel Acciari, Carolina regrouped, and Nikolaj Ehlers unleashed a powerful slap shot from the center point, doubling the lead at 6:24. Moments later, Jalen Chatfield added another, his wrist shot navigating through traffic to put Carolina up 3-0.
Pittsburgh had a chance to respond with a power play of their own, but it was Carolina threatening again. A two-on-one breakaway saw Seth Jarvis and Aho nearly score short-handed, but Skinner's quick reflexes kept the puck out. The Penguins have struggled with short-handed goals against, having allowed 11 this season.
Carolina's power play continued to shine, striking again with Evgeni Malkin in the box. Ehlers found Seth Jarvis, who swiftly converted, making it 4-0. It was a display of clinical execution by the Hurricanes.
Egor Chinakhov provided a glimmer of hope for Pittsburgh, scoring their lone goal late in the third. Chinakhov has been on fire since joining the Penguins, with 13 goals in 32 games.
Bryan Rust assisted, extending his career-high points streak to seven games. However, Carolina sealed the win with an empty-netter from Jankowski.
Looking ahead, the Penguins face a tough challenge against the league-leading Colorado Avalanche. Meanwhile, the outcome of the New York Islanders vs.
Columbus Blue Jackets game could impact Pittsburgh's playoff positioning. Columbus trails the Penguins by just one point, while the Islanders are three points behind.
