Penguins' Late Surge Falls Short Against Bears
In a thrilling showdown at Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins fell 4-2 to the Hershey Bears, marking their fourth consecutive loss. Despite a valiant third-period effort, the Penguins couldn't quite complete the comeback.
The game started quietly with a scoreless first period, but the Bears roared to life in the second. Andrew Cristall opened the scoring with a slick shot from the slot, setting off a flurry of goals for Hershey.
Sonny Milano's centering pass took an unexpected bounce off a Penguins skate, sneaking past the goalie for a two-goal lead. Ryan Chesley then capped off the blitz with a powerful wrister from the point, putting the Bears firmly in control.
Facing a three-goal deficit, the Penguins came out firing in the third. Aidan McDonough sparked hope with a pinpoint shot to the top corner just two-and-a-half minutes in. The momentum continued when Rafaël Harvey-Pinard capitalized on a power play, threading the puck through Mitch Gibson's five-hole to bring the Penguins within one.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton dominated the third period, out-shooting the Bears 14-4, but couldn't find the equalizer. Bogdan Trineyev's empty-netter for Hershey sealed the Penguins' fate.
In goal, Mitch Gibson was a wall for the Bears, turning away 30 shots. On the other side, Sergei Murashov made 20 saves for the Penguins.
The Penguins will look to bounce back against their in-state rivals, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, in their annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. The puck drops at 6:05 p.m. at Mohegan Arena.
