The Penguins are heading into a two-game set with the division-leading Checkers riding a weekend that showed both ends of their game: a frustrating late collapse in Utica, then a statement shutout in Hershey.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton opened the stretch Friday night in a 4-3 loss to the Comets, a game that turned fast after the Penguins built a 3-1 lead. Utica and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton each scored on their first shot, then Avery Hayes delivered a shorthanded goal and Bill Zonnon added an early second-period tally to put the Black and Gold up two. But the Comets answered with two goals in eight seconds to even the score before the second intermission, then finished the comeback with 30.8 seconds left in regulation.
Two nights later, the Penguins flipped the script in a big way. In the first of 12 meetings with Hershey this season, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton rolled to a 5-0 win behind Taylor Gauthier’s 43-save shutout.
Melvin Fernström and Zonnon each scored for the second straight game, while Rutger McGroarty, Mikhail Ilyin and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard also found the net. Phil Kemp chipped in three assists for a career high.
That performance helped keep the Penguins atop the Eastern Conference, where they are also tied for second overall in the AHL with 3.90 goals per game. Their penalty kill was perfect on the weekend, going 8-for-8, and it even added a shorthanded goal in Friday’s loss.
Gauthier’s night in Hershey stood out even more when stacked against the rest of the league’s numbers. His 43 saves were the second-most in a shutout in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton franchise history, and he’s now riding a four-game win streak with a 1.75 goals against average and .950 save percentage.
McGroarty’s scoring touch has been a major part of the recent surge, too. He has five goals in his last four AHL games. Hugh McGing has also been steady, putting together a four-game point streak with one goal and five assists, matching the longest run of his career.
Now comes a quick turnaround and a tougher test. The Penguins visit Charlotte on Friday and Saturday for back-to-back games against the Atlantic Division’s first-place team.
The Checkers have won seven of their last nine and have scored 17 goals across their three most recent victories. Charlotte has only scored first in four of its 12 games, but it has still found ways to rally, coming from behind to win five times after allowing the opening goal.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has handled Bojangles’ Coliseum well in recent trips. The Penguins won three of four visits there last season, and they are 9-6-0-1 in their last 16 games in Charlotte. Tristan Broz has also been productive against the Checkers, posting nine points - four goals and five assists - in 11 career games.
The roster has also seen some movement this week. Tiernan Shoudy and David Breazeale were reassigned to FLA on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Chase Pietila and Avery Hayes were reassigned from PIT on Wednesday, while Justin Brazeau was sent down on a conditioning loan the same day. Rutger McGroarty was reassigned from PIT on Sunday, Brazeau was recalled to PIT on Monday, and Jake Livanavage was recalled to PIT on Tuesday.
David Breazeale was also recalled from FLA on Tuesday.

Penguins Add To Blue Line Uncertainty Before Tough Road Stretch
The blue line picture got a little murkier for the Penguins organization on Thursday, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton recalling defenseman David Breazeale from the Florida Everblades. Breazeale had been down in the ECHL after appearing in four games for Florida this season, and he is no stranger to the AHL setup after spending time with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last year.
For a club heading into a tough road stretch, every extra body on defense matters, especially when the organization is juggling call-ups, lineup shuffling and the usual wear that comes with a long season. The Penguins also rolled out upcoming game schedules and ticket information, but the roster move is the part that stands out for now as the team sorts through its next steps on the back end. Penguins Need Answers Fast As Another Lineup Shakeup Hits
The Penguins head into their meeting with the Vegas Golden Knights at PPG Paints Arena trying to steady a season that has already been marked by losses and lineup churn. They will also unveil their Hometown Remix jerseys, adding a little spectacle to a night that feels more urgent than celebratory, especially with both clubs dealing with their own injury-related uncertainty.
Pittsburgh has confirmed Arturs Silovs as the starter in goal, while Vegas comes in after a shootout loss to Boston and is expected to counter with Adin Hill. The bigger question for the Penguins is whether they can find any rhythm at all amid the constant changes, because the roster picture is shifting again and the margin for error keeps getting thinner. Penguins Fans Now Have Another Reason To Be Frustrated
The Penguins recent stretch has given fans plenty to chew on, and not much of it has been comforting. Between the teams latest injury updates and a fresh round of lineup shuffling, the mood around Pittsburgh has been more restless than reassuring, especially with the club already trying to keep pace in a crowded Eastern Conference picture.
Off the ice, there has been no shortage of noise around the division either, with trade chatter picking up around rivals like Philadelphia and Washington. Add in the mixed reception to the Penguins new Hometown Remix jerseys, and it has been one of those weeks where even the small things seem to land wrong for a fan base looking for something to feel good about.
