Penguins Just Took A Brutal Short-Term Hit Up Front

The Penguins must adapt quickly as they face an extended period without key forward Bryan Rust, who will be sidelined until at least early December.

Pittsburgh will be without Bryan Rust for the foreseeable future after the veteran winger was ruled out for at least six weeks with a lower-body injury.

Head coach Dan Muse said Thursday that Rust will be re-evaluated in six weeks, which pushes his absence into December. The injury happened during Monday’s 5-4 loss to the Utah Mammoth.

Rust had been producing early this season, with three goals and five points in seven games. He had also been logging important minutes, averaging 17:22 of ice time, including just 9:32 against Utah.

The 34-year-old has been a steady source of offense for Pittsburgh for a while now. Last season, he put up 29 goals and 65 points in 72 games, making it three straight seasons with at least 28 goals and 55 points.

He is signed through the 2027-28 season with a cap hit of $5.125 million.

Rust was placed on injured reserve Thursday, and he was joined there by Ben Kindel, who suffered a medical episode on the team’s flight home from Utah Monday. There was encouraging news on Kindel, though, with general manager Kyle Dubas saying Thursday that he could be back at practice as soon as Sunday.

To help cover the openings, Pittsburgh recalled forward Rutger McGroarty and defenceman Chase Pietila.

McGroarty has been hot in the AHL, producing four goals and nine points in six games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He also had three goals and six points in 24 games with Pittsburgh last season.

Pietila has two assists in five games with the AHL Penguins this year. The 2024 fourth-round pick has not yet played in an NHL game.

The Penguins are set to host the Florida Panthers on Thursday.

Penguins Fans Now Wait On The Ben Kindel Recovery Timeline

The Penguins had to deal with an unsettling medical scare involving Ben Kindel after he collapsed on the team plane, an episode that immediately shifted attention away from the ice and toward his health. The club later confirmed the cause of the incident, easing some of the immediate uncertainty while still leaving the wider picture focused on his recovery and what comes next.

Kindel has been placed on injured reserve as he continues treatment and further testing, a reminder that these situations rarely come with quick answers. For Pittsburgh, the priority now is simply getting him the care and evaluation he needs, with the more important timeline still tied to how he responds in the days ahead. [Read more 🡒]

Penguins Already Have A Lineup Problem They Didn't Solve This Summer

Declan Carlile has given the Penguins one of those early-season roster questions that can linger if it is not handled quickly. He did manage to score a goal in recent games, but the larger issue has been his play in his own end, where the defensive breakdowns have outweighed the offensive flash and left Pittsburgh with a lineup spot that suddenly looks a lot less secure.

The problem for the Penguins is that they do not appear to have an obvious in-house fix sitting right behind him. The organization does have AHL names in the conversation, including Owen Pickering, but this is the kind of depth decision that can force a real rethink about how long Carlile stays in the mix if the recent form continues. Penguins Still Waiting On Ben Kindel After Scary Medical Episode

Ben Kindels immediate future remains up in the air after the young Penguins forward went through a frightening medical episode on the team plane after the club left Salt Lake City. He was given oxygen and taken to a medical center before being cleared to travel back to Pittsburgh the next day, a relief for everyone involved even as the team continues to monitor how quickly he can get back into a hockey rhythm.

The Penguins are already preparing to be without Kindel for at least a pair of home games, leaving a temporary hole in their lineup and another reminder of how quickly health can become the priority. A return to practice later in the week is still possible, but the next checkpoint for Pittsburgh will come when the team figures out whether he is ready to rejoin the lineup soon after. [Read more 🡒]
