Penguins Finally Get A Needed Lineup Boost Back

As the Pittsburgh Penguins navigate a challenging season amid injuries and a shaky record, they call up Justin Brazeau from the minors in hopes that his return will provide the offensive spark they sorely need.

The Penguins are bringing back a familiar depth scorer at a time when they need one.

Justin Brazeau has been recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after spending time on a conditioning stint while working his way back from the lower-body injury he suffered in the preseason. He appeared in two AHL games and picked up an assist before getting the call back to Pittsburgh.

The move was made retroactively after Rutger McGroarty was sent down to the AHL. McGroarty finished his first NHL stint of 2026-27 with two games played, compared to the 10 points he posted in seven games.

Brazeau is expected to be in line for his NHL season debut when the Penguins face Vegas tomorrow at 7 p.m. He was one of Pittsburgh’s bright spots last season, finishing with a career-high 17 goals and 34 points in the first year of a two-year deal carrying a $1.5MM AAV. That came after he scored 11 goals and 22 points split between the Bruins and Wild in 2024-25.

In 2025-26, Brazeau produced that scoring pace over 64 games and was the third most cost-effective player on the team, with a $44K cost-per-point average.

Pittsburgh has been hit hard by injuries to start the season, and the roster has struggled to keep pace. The Penguins have picked up five points since mid-October and sit second-to-last in the Eastern Conference Wild Card standings with a 5-7-2 record through 14 games.

Their goal differential is minus-2, and Brazeau gives them an underrated offensive option who can create chances, especially off the rush. Since joining the team in 2025-26, he has been third on Pittsburgh in points off the rush.

Penguins Face Another Brutal Test As Signs Of Life Start Showing

The Penguins have spent the past stretch taking their lumps against a difficult run of opponents, and the results have reflected it on the defensive end. Even so, there have been a few signs that the group is starting to steady itself, with Arturs Silovs turning in some encouraging outings in goal and Sidney Crosby helping drive the top line while the team looks for more consistent support around him.

Ben Kindels return added another positive note to a lineup that has been trying to piece things together, and Pittsburgh will need those small gains to carry over quickly.
