Joel Blomqvist made sure the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins left preseason on a high note Tuesday night, blanking the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 3-0 at PPL Center in Allentown.
Blomqvist stopped all 17 shots he saw and gave the Penguins a clean finish in a game where their special teams did plenty of the heavy lifting. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton cashed in twice on three power-play chances and killed all three Lehigh Valley opportunities, including a five-minute major.
The Penguins’ goalie was tested right away, turning away two close-range looks on the first shift. He also shut down Phantoms newcomer Jack Studnicka on a mini-breakaway later in the opening period to keep the game scoreless.
The breakthrough came at 6:45 of the second period, when Tanner Howe sent a stretch pass to Daniel Russell, who blew past the defense and beat Aleksei Kolosov.
Lehigh Valley then made its planned goalie switch, bringing in Carson Bjarnason. His night got difficult quickly, as Jake Livanavage blasted a slap shot into the top corner on a Penguins power play to make it 2-0.
The second period also got chippy. Max Graham and Andrew Perrott fought at center ice, and Finn Harding and Noah Powell twice dropped the gloves in separate scraps.
Mikhail Ilyin added the Penguins’ second power-play goal of the night at 6:40 of the third period. It was his fourth point of the preseason, with 2G-2A.
From there, Blomqvist finished the job, shutting the door the rest of the way and extending Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s preseason winning streak against Lehigh Valley to six games.
Kolosov finished with 10 saves on 11 shots, while Bjarnason stopped nine of 11.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton now turns to its 2026-27 season opener against the Springfield Thunderbirds on Saturday, Oct. 3. Puck drop for Opening Night presented by AMP Global Strategies is set for 6:05 p.m., with a pregame party beginning at 3:00 p.m. outside Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza.
That party will feature outdoor games, inflatables, face painters, concessions and live music, and Penguins players will come into the arena through the event with a gold-carpet, “March of the Penguins” greeting from fans.
Season-ticket packages for the Penguins’ 2026-27 regular season, including Full-Season, 22-game, 12-game, Flexbook and Premium Seating plans, along with Corporate Partnership opportunities, are available by contacting the Penguins at (570) 208-7367.

Sidney Crosby Still Looks Driven By Something Penguins Fans Need To See
Sidney Crosby is heading into his 22nd NHL season, and the details around Penguins practice still sound like the same player who has defined the franchise for years. Coach Dan Muse has seen Crosby bring the same relentless work ethic to the ice, alongside the longtime teammates who have grown up in this era with him. The routine may be familiar by now, but the standard Crosby sets has not changed.
Crosby has talked about how much he still loves the game and how much winning continues to matter, even after a long career and recent international play. For the Penguins, that matters as much as anything else this fall. The organization is trying to sort out what comes next, and the captains daily drive offers a reminder that the competitive fire is still there, even if the bigger question is how far it can carry them. McGing Gets An Emotional First Test In Penguins Home Opener
Hugh McGings first game for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton comes with a little extra weight to it, and the setting could hardly be better for the Penguins AHL opener. The forward, who signed with the organization during the offseason, will skate in the teams 2026-27 home opener on Oct. 3 against the Springfield Thunderbirds, the club he just left behind, with opening-night festivities set to give the evening a bigger stage than the usual first whistle.
The Penguins will lean into the occasion with a pregame outdoor festival and rally towels for fans, then keep the weekend rolling a day later against Hartford as the home slate gets underway. For McGing, it is a familiar opponent in a new sweater, and for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton it is the kind of early-season matchup that can turn a routine opener into something a little more personal. Penguins Open With One Early Change Fans Will Be Watching
Kyle Dubas is making clear the Penguins are not treating this season as a referendum on playoff math or championship talk, at least not publicly. The general manager said the focus is on improvement, a framing that fits a team trying to balance present-day competitiveness with a longer view, while Sidney Crosby continues to draw attention for how he is handling preseason work and what comes next in his own playing plans.
One early lineup wrinkle is already worth watching, with Egor Chinakhov moving into the top power-play group after Bryan Rust was placed on injured reserve. It is the kind of opening that can reshape opportunity for a forward in a hurry, and it arrives with another notable storyline looming on the calendar: the Penguins are set to lean into their 60th anniversary season with special touches, including a pregame ceremony on Oct. 3 and a retro-inspired logo.
