Evgeni Malkin Shines in Penguins' Dominant Win Over Avalanche
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Evgeni Malkin returned to the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup with a bang, leading his team to a surprising 7-2 victory over the NHL-leading Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena. After serving a five-game suspension, Malkin was the undeniable star of the night, making his presence felt with two spectacular goals.
Malkin's performance was nothing short of vintage. He started with a daring backhand maneuver that left even the Colorado fans in awe.
Later, he executed a quick backhand deke on a breakaway, showcasing his trademark finesse and precision. It was a night where Malkin reminded everyone why he's considered one of the game's greats.
“He was awesome. He was flying out there.
Wasn’t a surprise. You know, he’s just somebody who loves the game so much,” Penguins coach Dan Muse commented.
“He’s a competitor, and so, he had to sit there for five games and watch, and you can see how excited he was to be back, and it showed in his play.”
Malkin's two goals brought his season tally to 15, and his three-point night boosted his total to 50 points in 47 games. But beyond the stats, the win was a statement for the Penguins, who are eyeing a strong finish to the season.
Contract Talks on Hold
Amidst the excitement of his return, Malkin was asked about his contract status. Penguins GM Kyle Dubas had previously stated he wouldn’t comment, leaving the door open for Malkin to speak. However, Malkin chose to keep things focused on the ice.
“No, I can’t say anything. You know, we talked probably two weeks ago, and he told me, ‘Just wait until the summer.’
I mean, I’m okay with that,” Malkin said. “We have 15 games left, you know?
I hope for the playoffs, and I want to just play.”
Unlike his previous frustration after a loss to the Rangers, Malkin seemed more at ease this time, hinting at a positive outlook for the future.
Reflecting on the Suspension
Monday's game marked Malkin's return after a five-game suspension for an overhand slash on Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin. While Dahlin wasn’t injured, the NHL imposed the maximum suspension following a phone hearing.
Reflecting on the suspension, Malkin noted the complexities of the league's disciplinary actions. He compared his situation to that of Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas, who received the same suspension length for a kneeing incident that injured Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews.
“We see-it’s hard. I mean, now if you see rules, it’s like Matthews is out probably long term.
And Gudas got five games. I know I have a bad history, as they say.
I have slashed before, but again, no injury (caused),” Malkin explained. “I think if guys don’t have an injury, (a suspension) is a little bit less, maybe three games.
But its rules, you know?”
Despite the suspension's sting, Malkin is focused on the future, eager to leave the past behind and continue contributing to his team's success. With his standout performance against the Avalanche, Malkin has set the stage for an exciting run as the Penguins push towards the playoffs.
