Kris Letang Reaches Elite Milestone Few Defenders Ever Hit

Penguins star Kris Letang celebrates his 800th career point, joining an elite group of NHL defensemen and continuing Pittsburgh's tradition of individual excellence.

Kris Letang, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, added another impressive accolade to his career on Tuesday night against the Colorado Avalanche. With a first-period assist, Letang joined an elite group, becoming just the 21st defenseman in NHL history to reach 800 career points. This milestone places him among the greats, further cementing his legacy.

Despite Letang's achievement, the night wasn't all positive for the Penguins, who faced a tough loss. The milestone moment came when Tommy Novak cycled the puck to Letang along the boards.

Letang then delivered a precise pass across the zone to his defense partner, Sam Girard. Girard connected with Egor Chinakhov, who launched a powerful one-timer past Colorado's Scott Wedgewood, briefly tying the game at 1-1.

Head coach Dan Muse praised Letang's accomplishment, expressing disappointment that the team couldn't secure a win on such a significant night. “It’s an incredible milestone,” Muse remarked. “It’s well deserved.”

Letang's 800th point wasn't the only highlight. Girard, facing his former team, reached his 200th career assist, while Chinakhov set a personal best with his 17th goal of the season.

Joining the ranks of active defensemen like Erik Karlsson, Victor Hedman, and Brent Burns, Letang's achievement is noteworthy. Historically, of the 17 retired defensemen who have reached 800 points, 15 have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Throughout his career, Letang has often been in the shadows of Penguins legends Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Yet, his contributions from the blue line are just as remarkable.

Letang is now the ninth defenseman to achieve 800 points with a single franchise, sharing this distinction with Hedman among active players. All seven retired defensemen who accomplished this feat are Hall of Famers.

Coach Muse highlighted Letang’s dedication and preparation, acknowledging the significance of his continuous contributions. “You see why he’s been doing this for so long,” Muse said. “It’s a credit to what he’s been doing for all of these years.”

Continuing the Penguins' tradition of individual excellence since Mario Lemieux’s debut in 1984, Letang became the fourth defenseman to reach the 800-point milestone in a Penguins jersey. Following in the footsteps of Hall of Famers like Paul Coffey and Larry Murphy, Letang’s achievement is a testament to his enduring impact on the ice.
