Hurricanes Stun Penguins with Last-Second Overtime Goal in Thrilling Matchup

In an electrifying clash between Metropolitan Division powerhouses, the Hurricanes edged out the Penguins in a nail-biting 6-5 overtime thriller.

In a thrilling finish, Sean Walker netted the game-winner with just 28.3 seconds left in overtime, lifting the Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. This win dampened the spirits of Penguins fans who were celebrating Sidney Crosby's return to the lineup.

The Hurricanes showcased a balanced attack, with Jackson Blake leading the charge with a goal and two assists. Logan Stankoven, Taylor Hall, and Walker each contributed a goal and an assist, while Jordan Martinook and K'Andre Miller also found the back of the net. Nikolaj Ehlers was the playmaker, dishing out three assists, and Frederik Andersen held strong between the pipes with 30 saves.

For the Penguins, Erik Karlsson was a standout performer, recording two goals and an assist. Crosby, making his comeback after an 11-game absence due to a lower-body injury sustained at the Milan Cortina Olympics, added a goal and an assist. Bryan Rust and Ben Kindel also scored, while Stuart Skinner faced a barrage, stopping 38 shots in this intense Metropolitan Division showdown.

This game marked the second meeting in nine nights between these division powerhouses, with both encounters requiring extra time. Pittsburgh wrapped up a challenging road trip with a 2-1-2 record, which included a narrow 5-4 shootout defeat against the division-leading Hurricanes last week.

The final minutes of regulation were a flurry of action, as both teams scored twice in the last 7:01. Stankoven initially put the Hurricanes ahead 4-3, but the Penguins quickly responded with goals from Karlsson and Kindel just 23 seconds apart. Miller then tied it up again with 2:51 left, setting the stage for Walker's heroics in overtime.

Crosby's return was a bright spot for the Penguins, logging about 18½ minutes and scoring his 28th goal of the season midway through the second period. Meanwhile, Karlsson's equalizer early in the third came during a 5-on-3 power play, kicking off a wild period that saw seven total goals.

Martinook had the lone goal in a tight first period, scoring short-handed to give the Hurricanes an early edge.

Next up for the Hurricanes is a matchup against Toronto on Friday.
