Pitts Defense Just Raised A Bigger Concern Than Another Loss

Deck: In a crushing 52-23 defeat to top-ranked Miami, the Pitt Panthers face worsening prospects amid injury challenges and a faltering ACC run.

Pitt’s trip to face No. 1 Miami turned into the kind of night that leaves no doubt about where the Panthers stand right now.

The Hurricanes rolled to a 52-23 win, handing Pitt its third straight loss and its third ACC defeat. It was also the first time Pitt has given up 50 or more points since the 58-7 loss to Notre Dame in 2023.

The Panthers are now 5-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

That ACC mark already puts Pitt behind where it was last season, with more conference losses now than it had across the full year a season ago. And if Virginia Tech’s field goal kicker had been “just a foot more accurate,” the Panthers would be sitting at 1-4 in league play.

This was always the toughest game left on the schedule. Long before kickoff, a lot of Pitt fans had already tagged Miami as a likely loss and moved on to what came next.

That kind of matchup says something about the program, but it also raises the bigger point: even against a No. 1 team, Pitt ought to have a path to staying competitive. The last two top seeds, Texas and Georgia, both got knocked off by unranked teams.

With starting quarterback Mason Heintschel out because of an ACL tear, Pitt had to make a call at the most important position. True freshman Corey Dailey showed some encouraging signs against Boston College, but Pat Narduzzi went with the veteran Holden Geriner against the top-ranked Hurricanes.

Geriner turned in his best performance as a Panther. He completed passes for 268 yards, threw a touchdown and avoided interceptions, though he did lose a fumble.

The passing game had some life, and Cataurus "Blue" Hicks was the biggest reason why. He caught five passes for 149 yards and a touchdown. Even so, Pitt managed only 14 points before the starters were pulled.

Dailey eventually got on the field and connected with Cam Sapp on a 49-yard touchdown, but by then the game had long since slipped away.

The loss did not happen because of the offense alone. Pitt’s defense made some plays, finishing with six tackles for loss, three sacks and a safety, but it was still overwhelmed in the secondary. Heisman candidate Malachi Toney torched the Panthers for 194 receiving yards and three touchdowns, while Miami quarterback Darian Mensah threw for 387 yards, his second-highest total of the season.

That kind of damage in the back end has become a theme for Pitt. Miami (OH), North Carolina and Boston College all found big touchdown plays against the Panthers’ secondary earlier this year. Against a team loaded with talent, that weakness showed up again, and it underscored why Pitt keeps running into trouble against elite opponents.

With three ACC losses, Pitt is no longer in the mix for the ACC Championship. The focus now shifts to getting bowl-eligible, something the remaining schedule should make possible.

Next up is a home game on Halloween against Georgia Tech, which comes in at 2-3. After that, Pitt gets a bye week before entering a difficult three-game finish. The Panthers close by hosting Florida State, then heading on the road to face Louisville and Cal.

Pitt Is Turning The Pete Into A Much Bigger Event This Season

Pitt is making a noticeable push to turn the Petersen Events Center into more of an event destination for the 2026-27 mens basketball season. The program said it will layer in theme nights, exclusive giveaways, halftime entertainment and expanded perks for season ticket holders, all part of a broader effort to give games at the Pete a little more theater from start to finish.

The calendar already has a few markers that should help set the tone, beginning with the opener against Rider and a slate of special promotions spread through the year. One of the biggest dates on the schedule comes in early December, when the Backyard Basketball Classic brings Pitt and West Virginia to PPG Paints Arena, giving the Panthers another showcase date in front of a larger crowd and a familiar rivalry backdrop. Pitt Just Got A Harsh Look At Miamis Championship Ceiling

Pitt came away with a blunt reminder of where Miamis season may be headed after the Hurricanes handled the Panthers 52-23 on Saturday. Miami looked every bit like the countrys top team, piling up offense in a way Pitt could not keep pace with as Darian Mensah threw for 387 yards and four touchdowns.

The Hurricanes are now 7-0 overall and 5-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, and the No. 1 ranking is starting to feel less like a snapshot and more like a statement. Pitt, meanwhile, dropped to 5-3 and 2-3 in league play, leaving the Panthers to sort through a loss that exposed just how high Miamis championship ceiling might be. [Read more 🡒]

Pitt Volleyball Looks Every Bit Like A Team Building Toward More

Pitts trip to Atlanta brought another familiar result, and it came in the kind of efficient fashion that keeps reinforcing how complete this volleyball group has become. The Panthers swept Georgia Tech 3-0, controlled the net from start to finish and never let the Yellow Jackets find much rhythm, finishing with a 13-6 edge in blocks and holding Georgia Tech to a .055 hitting percentage.

Olivia Babcock was once again central to the effort, and Izzy Starck kept the offense organized while turning in another productive all-around night. Pitt has now stacked up more of these convincing road performances, and the way it handled Georgia Tech on this stage only adds to the sense that this team is still building toward something bigger as the schedule moves deeper into conference play.
