Pitt now has the full outline of its 2026-27 non-conference schedule, and it’s a mix of early home warmups, familiar regional matchups and a few eye-catching tests away from Oakland.
The Panthers will play 14 games outside the ACC before conference action begins, giving Jeff Capel’s team a full 32-game regular season slate. Some of the dates and opponents had already surfaced, but Tuesday’s announcement made the entire non-league picture official.
The opening stretch stays close to home. Pitt starts the season on Monday, November 2, against Rider at Petersen Events Center, then hosts Buffalo on Thursday, November 5. The Broncs are coming off a 4-25 season and ranked No. 357 out of 365 Division I teams in KenPom.com.
The first road trip comes a few days later, but it’s not a long one. On Sunday, November 8, Pitt and Penn State will meet at the Palestra in Philadelphia. The teams played in Hershey last season, and Pitt rolled to an 80-46 win.
From there, the schedule turns more demanding. Pitt heads to Hinkle Fieldhouse on November 13 for a true road game against Butler.
The Bulldogs will be coached by Ronald Nored, a former Butler player in his first year at the helm. Nored played under Brad Stevens and faced Pitt in the 2011 NCAA Tournament and 2012 CBI.
Another Big East opponent comes next. Villanova visits Oakland on November 17 in the return game of a home-and-home after the Wildcats beat Pitt 79-61 at Finneran Pavilion last year. It will be Villanova’s first trip to Petersen Events Center since March 3, 2013, when Pitt won 73-64 in overtime in its final regular-season home game as a member of the Big East.
Pitt gets one more home tune-up on November 20 against Central Michigan before heading to Florida for the Fort Myers tipoff at Suncoast Arena. That event will feature two predetermined opponents instead of a traditional tournament bracket.
The Panthers open the Fort Myers trip against Oklahoma on Tuesday, November 24, which puts Capel against the program he once led from 2006-2011. He took the Sooners to the Elite 8 in 2009 before being fired two years later.
Thanksgiving Day brings DePaul, giving Pitt its third non-conference game against a Big East program. The Blue Demons roster includes Amsal Delalic, a former Pitt guard who played for the Panthers two years ago.
December starts with another major road test in the ACC/SEC Challenge, as Pitt visits Missouri on December 1. The Tigers beat Pitt in 2023 in the first year of the event. Pitt is 0-3 in the ACC-SEC Challenge, and the SEC has held a 23-9 advantage over the last two years.
One of the season’s biggest non-conference games shifts venues this year. The Backyard Brawl will be played at PPG Paints Arena on December 9 after years as an on-campus event.
Pitt and West Virginia have met every season except one since 2017, when the series was revived after both schools left the Big East. West Virginia has a 6-2 edge in that stretch, including a 71-49 win in Morgantown last November.
Pitt finishes non-conference play with three more games before ACC action ramps up after the holidays. The Panthers host Drexel on December 15, Georgia State on December 18 and Cleveland State on December 21.
The full ACC schedule has not been released yet, though Pitt already knows its conference opponents. Home games will come against North Carolina, Syracuse, Virginia, Miami, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Boston College, Georgia Tech and California. Dates and times are expected in September.
Pitt is trying to move past a 13-20 season and has added 13 newcomers in hopes of getting back into NCAA Tournament contention.
