Pitt’s defense carried the day again, and the Panthers are 2-0 after grinding out a 12-7 win over UCF at Acrisure Stadium on a rainy Week 2 afternoon.
This one was all about survival in ugly conditions. Pitt kept the Golden Knights out of the end zone until just under four minutes remained in the fourth quarter, then got one more critical stop after the offense stalled with 2:24 left. The Panthers never needed fireworks; they needed their defense to keep slamming the door, and that’s exactly what happened.
The lone Pitt touchdown came from running back Damon Ferguson Jr., who handled 20 carries for 59 yards. As a team, the Panthers ran for 103 yards and averaged just 2.4 yards per rush.
Mason Heintschel followed up his school-record seven-touchdown performance against Miami (OH) by going 18 of 29 for 212 yards. Cataurus Hicks was his top target, finishing with three catches for 64 yards.
Pitt’s defense made life miserable for UCF from start to finish. The Golden Knights managed only 186 passing yards and 20 rushing yards, with 22 carries producing just 0.9 yards per attempt. Alonza Barnett’s 13 rushes went for 13 yards, and his longest run of the day was 18 yards.
The Panthers also piled up three sacks and eight tackles for loss.
Pitt opened the season with a 59-14 win over Miami (OH), and now turns to Syracuse for its first ACC game of the year. After that comes Bucknell at Acrisure Stadium, followed by a trip to Virginia Tech to start the rest of the ACC schedule.
