Pitt’s offense lit up Bucknell, and freshman wide receiver Demetrice McCray walked away with league recognition to match it.
The Atlantic Coast Conference named McCray its Rookie of the Week on Monday after he posted three catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns in Pitt’s 59-0 win at Acrisure Stadium. For the Panthers, it was another sign that the freshman class is already making noise. McCray became the second Pitt freshman to earn the honor this season, following running back Damon Ferguson, who picked it up one week earlier after his showing against Syracuse.
McCray made his biggest impact in the second quarter, when Mason Heintschel found him on a back-shoulder fade to push Pitt ahead 21-0. Before halftime, the two connected again on a 48-yard strike that stretched the lead to 35-0. After the game, Heintschel had plenty of praise for his young target.
"He's a really great player and a really great kid, too," Heintschel said of his younger teammate following Saturday's game. "He listens really well.
He'll make a mistake, but he doesn't do it again. That's a special player."
The outing carried a little more history, too. McCray became the first Pitt freshman wide receiver to post a multi-touchdown game since Tyler Boyd did it in 2013. A three-star recruit in the class of 2026 out of The First Academy in Orlando, McCray picked Pitt over offers from Boston College, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisville, Mississippi State, NC State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Purdue, UCF and others.
His role appears to be growing quickly. McCray caught two passes for 24 yards in Pitt’s opener against Miami, giving him five receptions in his young career. With his production and the injury to starter Malik Knight, the Florida native looks set to stay in the mix.
At 6-foot-0 and 205 pounds, McCray gives Pitt a receiver who can handle contact and win contested balls. He said the connection with Heintschel has been built through extra work after practice, which helped turn Saturday into a breakout performance.
"We get extra work," McCray said of what allowed him to be successful in Saturday's game. "We do the extra work, so that's all that really matters to me is the extra work so I know that the next time, we're going to get it right."
Pitt’s offense was on another level against Bucknell, piling up 766 yards and setting a school record with eight touchdown passes. McCray accounted for two of them.
The Panthers will try to keep that momentum going Friday night, when they head to Blacksburg to face undefeated Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. with coverage on ESPN.
