Cruce Brookins Stuns with Potential for Pitt Panthers' 2026 Season

Amid high expectations, Cruce Brookins aims to lead the Pitt Panthers with strength and resilience in the 2026 season.

Cruce Brookins is gearing up to make a significant impact for the Pitt Panthers in the 2026 season. As a fourth-year safety from Steel Valley, Brookins has already established himself as a cornerstone of the Panthers' defense over the past two seasons. The coaching staff has high expectations, aiming for him to achieve All-American and all-conference status.

Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi recently highlighted these aspirations during a press briefing, emphasizing the need for Brookins to stay healthy and on the field. In 2025, injuries sidelined him for three games, yet he still managed an impressive performance with 53 tackles and two interceptions in ten games, earning honorable mention All-ACC. For 2026, the Panthers will rely even more on his presence.

Brookins' playing style is all about intensity and physicality, which, while commendable, contributed to his time off the field last season. He's aware of this and is focusing on staying fit during spring practice. "I need to put on more weight," Brookins shared, noting he's upped his weight to 200 pounds to better handle the physical demands of the game.

His experience is invaluable, especially as the only returning safety with significant playing time. The Panthers are bringing in sophomores Allen Bryant and Joshua Guerrier for bigger roles, alongside some promising freshmen, but no transfers. This strategy underscores the faith the program has in Brookins and the younger players.

Narduzzi also praised Brookins' leadership, describing him as smart, intense, and vocal. His leadership is crucial as the team integrates new players, including cornerback transfers Raion Strader and Kanye Thompson from Western Pennsylvania.

For Brookins, spring practice is about building chemistry with these new teammates. "We have a lot to learn," he noted, emphasizing the need for more film study and connection on the field.

As the Panthers return to practice on March 17th, all eyes will be on Brookins as he leads the defense into the upcoming season, culminating in the Blue-Gold Game on April 11th. The stage is set for Brookins to shine, and if he can stay healthy, he could be a game-changer for Pitt in 2026.
