The Phoenix Suns still have work to do even after a busy stretch of roster movement, and the next area they’re expected to attack is the guard market.
Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro said Phoenix is likely to go looking for “a fourth guard” in free agency and can offer up to $6 million through the taxpayer mid-level exception. He also laid out the names he expects the Suns to pursue, noting that “A couple of these guys may get 8-12 million and be priced out but again this is who I expect they will look at: Luke Kennard, Kevin Huerter, Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson, De'Anthony Melton, and Wild Card - Landry Shamet.”
That search comes after a summer that already brought back Mark Williams, Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin, while Phoenix also made a move just yesterday by sending Grayson Allen and Royce O'Neale to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Miles Bridges, with draft picks also swapped.
Among the names Gambadoro listed, Kennard stands out as the cleanest fit if the Suns want shooting. He connected on 47.8% of his three-pointers last season and owns a career mark of 44.2% from deep. With Koa Peat and Bridges added as more paint-oriented pieces, Phoenix could be looking to replace some of the perimeter spacing it moved out with Allen and O'Neale.
Huerter brings a similar outside threat with a little more size. He can function as a stretch-three forward, shot 36.8% from three for his career and averaged 10 points a game last season as a role player.
Sexton is the biggest name on the list and a player Suns fans already know well. He’s a 6-3 combo guard who fits more as a scorer than a traditional point guard.
Clarkson has long been linked to Phoenix as well. Gambadoro pointed to him as someone associated with winning basketball, and said that was reinforced this year by helping the Knicks win the NBA Finals.
Melton would give the Suns defense and versatility, two traits that matter even more in a backcourt that already has Devin Booker, Jalen Green and Gillespie expected to handle heavy minutes.
Shamet is the familiar face in the group, and Gambadoro suggested he could be a return option even if it doesn’t feel especially likely. He was a key shooting presence for New York during its championship run.
