Grayson Allen’s night ended with a painful twist-literally-as the Phoenix Suns guard exited late in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s matchup against the Golden State Warriors with what appeared to be an ankle injury.
The injury came with just under three minutes left on the clock. Allen, battling on the boards, came down awkwardly after stepping on Gary Payton II’s foot.
He immediately grimaced and hit the floor, clearly in discomfort. Though he managed to walk off under his own power, Allen headed straight to the locker room and didn’t return.
It was a tough break for both Allen and the Suns, especially considering how impactful he’d been up to that point. In 33 minutes of action, Allen poured in 21 points, knocking down five threes while also contributing five rebounds and four assists. His offensive rhythm and floor spacing were keeping Phoenix in striking distance.
But without Allen down the stretch, the Suns couldn’t keep pace. They were outscored 25-15 in the final quarter and ultimately fell 101-97, dropping to 31-21 on the season.
Allen’s injury comes at a particularly inopportune time for Phoenix. Devin Booker has already missed the last seven games due to his own ankle issue, and Allen had stepped up in a big way during that stretch. Over those seven games, the 30-year-old has averaged 20.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists-numbers that underscore how vital he’s been in keeping the Suns afloat without their All-Star guard.
It’s unclear how long Allen might be sidelined, and that’s a major concern for a team already navigating through injury turbulence. He’s already missed 18 games this season, and any additional absence could put more pressure on a rotation that’s had to stay flexible.
Dillon Brooks did his part to shoulder the load, finishing with a game-high 24 points, though it took him 24 shots to get there. Mark Williams chipped in with a steady double-double-11 points and 10 rebounds-but the offensive execution wasn’t enough to close the gap in crunch time.
Phoenix is now 6-4 over its last 10 games, a stretch that’s featured both gritty wins and missed opportunities. They’ll look to regroup quickly with a Saturday showdown against the Philadelphia 76ers looming.
Adding to the busy day, the Suns made moves at the trade deadline, acquiring Cole Anthony and Amir Coffey in a three-team deal involving the Milwaukee Bucks and Chicago Bulls. Whether those additions can help patch the backcourt depth in the short term remains to be seen, but with Booker still out and Allen’s status uncertain, Phoenix may need them to contribute sooner rather than later.
Suns cannot catch break on injuries. Grayson Allen looks to roll his ankle. He looked like he was in a lot of pain. Hope it’s not serious pic.twitter.com/7qEZNRY8vE
