Suns Get A Needed Frontcourt Boost Against Denver

With Oso Ighodaro's return, the Suns aim to fortify their defense and address rebounding struggles against the Nuggets.

The Suns will have Oso Ighodaro back in the mix tonight against the Denver Nuggets.

Phoenix officially cleared the center for the NBA Cup opener after he was listed as questionable with a right oblique strain. Ighodaro had missed the Suns’ last two games, but coach Jordan Ott said before tipoff that he was trending in the right direction, and the update now makes it official. Suns-Nuggets is scheduled to start just after 7:00 pm MST at Mortgage Matchup Center.

Ighodaro had been increasing his workload over the last few days as he tried to get back on the floor.

"This was his highest day back. It's helpful we've got a couple days - that's been good over the last week but we're going to be smart with him the same. We'll see how he reacts [after] today's practice but he went through most of practice," Ott said back on Wednesday.

His return matters because Phoenix has been thin and underwhelming around the basket. With Mark Williams out and Ighodaro sidelined, the Suns have taken a hit on the glass and enter the night second to last in team rebounds per game at 39.7.

The bigger issue inside the building this week has been the defense, where the Suns have been trying to clean up a shaky start.

"It's an effort thing. Sometimes we're not in the right spots, but that could be handled with communication. Right now, it's just giving more effort, getting to the ball more, and finishing possessions with rebounds," Miles Bridges said in the build-up to tonight.

"We just been working on all defensive stuff. Getting into the ball, finishing the plays with rebounds.

Just our physicality on defense needs to get better. So that's what we've been working on."

What Ighodaro does from here is still the question. His athleticism and ability to contribute offensively give Phoenix something it has lacked, and his presence should help a center room that has been stretched thin. Duop Reath is not a player the Suns should be leaning on for major NBA minutes, and Khaman Maluach has struggled in the starting role to open the regular season.

The Suns clearly like what Ighodaro brings as a center, especially his versatility on both ends. He does not provide the same rim protection as Maluach, but in the eyes of Ott and his staff, he may be the better fit for what they want to do right now.

That’s why Maluach starting over a healthy Ighodaro on opening night stood out. Now, after a stretch without Ighodaro, Phoenix may at least consider whether a change at center could help the group settle in.

Suns Enter Nuggets Matchup With A Problem Fans Can Feel

The Suns head into their matchup with Denver carrying a roster issue that has been hard to ignore, and it is the kind of problem fans can spot even before tipoff. NBA insider Chris Haynes reported internal frustration over the lack of a true point guard, a concern that has hovered around the team as it tries to find a steadier rhythm on offense.

Phoenix will also have to manage that issue while dealing with another absence, with starting center Mark Williams sidelined. Denver brings its own injury questions into the game, listing two players as questionable and two out, and the Nuggets have a little extra incentive with a chance to move their record above .500. Suns Already Have A Defensive Problem They Can't Ignore

The early returns on defense have been rough enough to demand attention, and the Suns have spent recent practices trying to clean up the issues before they harden into a bigger problem. Through the first three games of the season, Phoenix has sat last in defensive rating and has allowed opponents to shoot the highest three-point percentage in the league, a troubling start for a team that knows it cannot afford to give away easy looks.

Jordan Ott and the players have made the focus clear: better effort, sharper communication and more physical play on that end of the floor. Dillon Brooks, Miles Bridges and Khaman Maluach have all acknowledged the need for improvement, and the timing matters with the Denver Nuggets up next, a matchup that will quickly show whether the Suns' defensive emphasis is starting to stick. Suns Have Reached A Devin Booker Debate Fans Dread

The Suns have reached the kind of uneasy place where even a star like Devin Booker can become part of the conversation around what comes next. With the team struggling and the locker room already described as unsettled, the noise around Phoenix has grown loud enough that outside voices are now floating ideas that would have sounded unthinkable not long ago. One of those came from Bill Simmons, who suggested on his podcast that a Booker-for-Bam Adebayo swap could help both Phoenix and Miami.

It is the sort of debate Suns fans dread because it forces a hard look at where the franchise stands right now and what kind of reset might actually make sense. Booker remains the face of the team, but the broader question is whether Phoenix can keep building around him as constructed, or whether the pressure around the roster has reached a point where even a player of his stature gets dragged into trade speculation. For now, there is no official move or confirmation, just a conversation that says plenty about how far the Suns have fallen into uncertainty. [Read more 🡒]
