Dillon Brooks Brings the Fire, But Suns Fall Short Against Sixers in Gritty Showdown
Dillon Brooks is usually the guy lighting the fuse. But Saturday night in Phoenix, it was Kelly Oubre Jr. who struck the match.
In a game that had all the markings of a playoff-style slugfest, the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers didn’t just trade buckets-they traded words, shoves, and plenty of attitude. And while Brooks is no stranger to on-court theatrics, it was Oubre who took center stage in a heated second-half exchange that had Footprint Center buzzing.
The two veteran forwards got tangled up during a tense sequence, and it quickly escalated. Oubre, not typically the one to initiate the smoke, let Brooks hear it.
The two jawed back and forth before teammates stepped in to separate them. It was a rare moment where Brooks wasn’t the one poking the bear-he was the bear being poked.
That wasn't the only chippy moment of the night. Brooks and Joel Embiid exchanged words throughout the game, adding to the growing list of battles within the battle.
But it was the Oubre-Brooks confrontation that stood out, mostly because of the role reversal. Brooks, usually the instigator, found himself on the receiving end of the trash talk.
Still, Brooks didn’t back down-and more importantly, he didn’t let it derail his game. In fact, he was the lone bright spot in an otherwise cold shooting night for Phoenix.
Brooks poured in a team-high 28 points, doing everything he could to keep the Suns afloat as they struggled from deep, hitting just 11-of-46 from three-point range. That kind of shooting will sink you fast in today’s NBA, and it did.
Devin Booker, returning from an ankle injury, chipped in 21 points, but it was clear he’s still working his way back to full form. The Suns, as a whole, just couldn’t find the rhythm they needed to match the Sixers' firepower.
And that firepower? It starts-and often ends-with Joel Embiid.

The reigning MVP was in full control, finishing with 33 points and nine rebounds, doing his usual damage in the paint and from the line. Tyrese Maxey added 29, including a cold-blooded stepback three late in the fourth quarter that effectively sealed the deal. When the Sixers needed a closer, Maxey answered the call.
Oubre, in his return to Phoenix, added 18 points of his own-just enough to twist the knife a little deeper for the home crowd. His energy, both in scoring and in stirring the pot, gave the Sixers an emotional edge that carried through the second half.
For the Suns, this marks their third loss in four games-a skid that underscores some lingering chemistry issues. They're still working Jalen Green back into the rotation, and the offense hasn’t quite clicked around him yet. The pieces are there, but the cohesion isn’t.
And while the Brooks-Oubre dust-up gave fans a flash of drama, the real story is Phoenix’s perimeter shooting. You’re not going to win many games shooting 24% from deep, especially not against a team with Embiid and Maxey leading the charge.
The Suns have some soul-searching to do before their next outing. The grit is there.
The fight is there. But until the shots start falling-and the rotations settle-moral victories won’t mean much in a Western Conference that doesn’t wait for anyone.
