Khaman Maluach Linked to Suns as Playoff Push Gains Momentum

Suns GM Brian Gregory hints at a bold move by potentially elevating rookie Khaman Maluach's role amidst a crucial playoff race.

The Phoenix Suns are back from the All-Star break, recharged and ready to make a playoff push. However, they'll be missing Dillon Brooks for their clash against the San Antonio Spurs.

General Manager Brian Gregory recently addressed the media, shedding light on the possibility of rookie center Khaman Maluach seeing more action on the court.

Maluach's Potential Increase in Minutes

With Nick Richards now part of the Chicago Bulls, Maluach might find more opportunities to showcase his skills. Gregory hinted that giving the 19-year-old more minutes is on the table, though it's a bold move considering his inexperience.

The Suns have exceeded expectations with a 32-23 record. Raw prospects, especially at center, are prone to mistakes, which the Suns can ill afford as they eye the postseason. Head coach Jordan Ott has been cautious with rookie minutes so far.

Yet, Gregory's track record speaks for itself. He was instrumental in the successful Kevin Durant trade and in drafting Maluach. The Suns have also excelled in building depth with players like Collin Gillespie, Jordan Goodwin, Jamaree Bouyea, and Mark Williams making significant contributions.

If Gregory believes Maluach can step up sooner than anticipated, the Suns have every reason to trust his judgment. However, there's inherent risk. Throwing Maluach into the mix now could impact the team's standings and the rookie's confidence if he struggles against seasoned veterans.

Fans would be disappointed if the Suns miss the play-in tournament, especially since the ideal time to test Maluach was early in the season when expectations were low.

Gregory also noted that both Maluach and Rasheer Fleming are eager to play in as many G League games as possible, demonstrating their readiness to take on larger roles.

Gregory seems confident in Maluach's readiness to contribute, and only time will reveal if this is a masterstroke or a rare misstep in his tenure.
