Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks didn’t hide his frustration after Wednesday’s game, taking aim at the league’s new points of emphasis and the way they’re being enforced in the preseason.
Brooks finished with five fouls in 23 minutes, and afterward he made clear he wants the same standard applied across the NBA.
“I think they're trying to reinvent the wheel, and it doesn't work like that,” he said via AZCentral's Duane Rankin on X (formerly Twitter).
“I hope that it's not just only me; I hope it's every single person, human being that's playing basketball in the NBA is getting that call, or they're giving out that call. We'll see how the season goes.”
The league has been working through updated points of emphasis that touch on push-offs, extending the arm and playing with excessive force on drives to the basket. For now, preseason is serving as the proving ground, and Brooks appears to be right in the middle of it.
During Suns training camp, NBA officials were on hand for the second and third days to walk players through the changes and explain what will and won’t be allowed. Devin Booker thought having them there was a good idea, and Jordan Ott agreed.
That kind of clarity matters, especially for a player like Brooks. His game is built on physicality, and he has long walked that fine line without crossing it too often. If these new standards take away part of what he does best, he needs to know that now.
If they don’t get defined clearly, the confusion can keep piling up for everyone involved.
The good news for Phoenix is that preseason is the right time to sort it out. And with Brooks expected to be a central force in the Suns’ culture, they’ll need him as comfortable and effective as possible once the games count.

Miles Bridges Injury Scare Wont Stop A Big Suns Evaluation
Miles Bridges gave the Suns a brief scare in preseason action when he exited early with a right ankle injury, but the early read from the team was not especially alarming. Head coach Jordan Ott said Bridges has a chance to play in the upcoming game against the San Antonio Spurs, and Collin Gillespie said Bridges reported feeling fine after the game, which at least keeps the injury from turning into a bigger immediate concern.
Even with Bridges being monitored, Phoenix still has a bigger preseason purpose in mind. The Suns want these exhibition games to help them evaluate other players, get a clearer look at their depth and sort out the pieces around their core, all while making sure Bridges is handled carefully as he works through the ankle issue. Suns Just Got Exposed In A Way Fans Know Too Well
The Suns ran into a familiar problem against Chicago, one that showed up again in a 124-117 loss to the Bulls. Phoenix got solid individual performances, but the group never matched the Bulls balance, as Chicago spread the scoring around and got important production from its bench to keep control of the game.
Josh Giddey kept the offense moving with his passing even without much scoring, while Matas Buzelis added activity on the defensive end along with his points. For Phoenix, the issue was less about one cold night than the larger pattern fans have seen before: enough talent to hang around, not enough consistency to finish the job when the game tightened up. Devin Booker's New Suns Role Is Off To A Shaky Start
Devin Booker has made it clear he wants to be a more willing shooter in the 2026-27 season, but the early returns in Suns preseason have been uneven. Through two games, he has struggled from beyond the arc while trying to settle into a version of his role that asks for more jumpers and, ideally, more confidence as a perimeter threat.
Booker has said he knows there is work to do and is reviewing his shots to clean things up. Jordan Ott, meanwhile, is sticking with the bigger-picture plan, saying Booker will continue to make plays and do the right thing for the offense rather than force shots when defenses load up on him, leaving the balance between aggression and control as the next thing to watch.
