Zack Wheeler Stuns Fans With Bold Move Before Phillies Return

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler remains confident about his recovery and return, despite missing the Grapefruit League, as he gears up for a crucial rehab assignment.

Zack Wheeler is gearing up for a promising return to the Phillies' rotation, with his journey continuing this weekend in Triple-A with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Phillies manager Rob Thomson confirmed that Wheeler is set to begin a rehab assignment on Saturday, pitching three innings against Toledo in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Rehab assignments for pitchers can extend up to 30 days, positioning Wheeler for an April comeback. On Monday, Wheeler showcased his skills in a two-inning simulated game at Carpenter Complex, retiring seven of eight batters and throwing 29 pitches with a velocity around 94 mph. “A successful spring,” Wheeler remarked, clearly satisfied with his progress.

Wheeler anticipates making three to four starts with the IronPigs before rejoining the Phillies next month. He'll travel with the team to Philadelphia for Opening Day, allowing for regular check-ins with the Phillies staff between his minor league appearances.

Reflecting on his preparation, Wheeler noted, “It would’ve been nice to get into a [Grapefruit League] game, but this is good enough.” His focus remains on sticking to the plan and avoiding setbacks as he gears up for the season.

Despite losing weight post-surgery in September, Wheeler remains unfazed, drawing confidence from past performances at a lighter weight. “I pitched at 185 with the Mets and did well,” he shared, demonstrating his adaptability.

The Phillies are optimistic about Wheeler's return to his Cy Young-caliber form. Thomson expressed his confidence, noting Wheeler’s command and velocity are right where they should be for this time of year.

Meanwhile, right-hander Orion Kerkering, recovering from a strained right hamstring, made his third spring appearance. He’ll start the season on the injured list but could be back in action as early as April 7. The anticipation is building as the Phillies look forward to a strong start to the season with key players poised to make impactful returns.
